Overview

The Anderson Spectrum M48 is the 4 x 8 model of the Spectrum-M series, Anderson's compact router line. It has a 2500 mm (98”) by 1300 mm (51”) table with a single vacuum zone, a 12 HP spindle and a rack style tool changer with 6 positions. The machine weighs 2,700 Kg (6,000 lbs.).

Several rows of the table show where the M48 has been kept simple. There is one spindle rating, 12 HP at up to 22,000 rpm on HSK-63F. Tools sit in a rack, so each change is a trip to the rack and back. A C-axis is listed as not available. Z stroke is 200 mm (8”), and the Z rapid is 12 m/min.

What has not been cut back is the drive train. X and Y run on helical rack and pinion and Z on a ball screw, with rapids of 60 m/min in X and Y and a maximum rapid traverse of 85 m/min. Anderson states that the series shares the spindle, racks and pinions and FANUC control systems with its larger models, and that construction is 100% steel. The control is FANUC 0i.

One zone means the whole table is either on or off. Full 4 x 8 sheets are fine; smaller blanks need the open area covered. A boring block is listed as 6 inline, or 5+5, and compact aggregate ability is standard. Vacuum pumps of 10, 25 or 40 HP are offered. Strokes are 2580 mm (101”) in X and 1585 mm (62”) in Y.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Lightest machine in the series at 2,700 Kg (6,000 lbs.)
  • Helical rack and pinion on X and Y with a ball screw on Z
  • 60 m/min rapids in X and Y and an 85 m/min maximum rapid traverse
  • 12 HP HSK-63F spindle at up to 22,000 rpm under a FANUC 0i control
  • Compact aggregate ability is listed as standard

Limitations

  • Rack style tool changer has 6 positions, against 8 on the Spectrum M510
  • A single vacuum zone, so partial sheets leave open table to mask
  • C-axis is listed as not available
  • Z stroke is 200 mm (8”) with a 12 m/min Z rapid

Best For

4 x 8 sheet in wood, plastic, aluminum or composites Shops with limited floor space or a first production router Jobs that need no more than 6 tools in the rack Flat panel work within 200 mm (8”) of Z stroke

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the table size of the Spectrum M48?

2500 mm (98”) in X by 1300 mm (51”) in Y, with strokes of 2580 mm (101”) and 1585 mm (62”). Anderson says the series is available in sizes from 4' x 8' to 5' x 12'; the M48 is the smallest, and the Spectrum M510 is the next size with a 3100 mm (122”) by 1550 mm (61”) table.

02 How many tools does the Spectrum M48 hold?

The rack style tool changer has 6 positions on this model. The Spectrum M510 and Spectrum M512 have 8. A boring block, listed as 6 inline, or 5+5, drills hole patterns without taking up rack positions.

03 Can a C-axis be added to the Spectrum M48?

No. The C-axis row is marked as not available for all three Spectrum-M sizes. Compact aggregate ability is listed as standard, and reverse air flow, a bar-code reader, an offload pusher sweeper and automatic off-loading are optional.

04 What control and drives does the Spectrum M48 use?

A FANUC 0i control, helical rack and pinion drives on X and Y and a ball screw on Z. Rapid travel is 60 m/min in X and Y and 12 m/min in Z. Anderson states the series shares its spindle, racks and pinions and FANUC control systems with the company's larger models.
