Overview

Of Johnford's lathes with 1,600 mm (63 in) of Z travel, the Johnford ST-70AH has the quickest combination of spindle and axes: 3,000 rpm, 15 m/min on X and 18 m/min on Z, with 7 kW servo motors behind both axes.

It helps to place it between its neighbours. The ST-70A has the same spindle and rapids but 4 kW motors and 600 mm (23.6 in) of swing over the cross slide. The ST-70AX has more swing, 800 mm (31.5 in) over the cross slide, but its rapids drop to 12 m/min and 16 m/min. The ST-70AH sits in the middle at 700 mm (27.6 in) and keeps the higher rapid rates.

For production shaft work that mix is useful. Short positioning moves dominate the cycle on a part with many diameters and grooves, and a carriage that accelerates on 7 kW drives and traverses at 18 m/min shortens them.

The spindle has a 115 mm (4.5 in) bore, 91 mm (3.6 in) of bar capacity and 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) through an Auto Hi-Lo transmission. Tailstock travel is 1,300 mm (51.2 in) on an MT#5 quill. The machine weighs 13,200 kg (29,040 lb) and measures 6,482 x 2,290 x 2,765 mm (255.2 x 90.2 x 108.9 in).
