Overview

The heaviest of the nine small-frame ST lathes is the Johnford ST-70C at 13,250 kg (29,150 lb). It joins the A2-15 spindle and its 510 mm (20.1 in) chuck to 1,600 mm (63 in) of Z travel.

This is as far as the small frame goes, and the tailstock shows it. A part filling the chuck and reaching 1,600 mm (63 in) down the bed can be heavy, yet the quill supporting it is Ø125 mm (4.9 in) with an MT#5 taper and 125 mm (4.9 in) of travel. The next model up, the ST-80C, has a Ø200 mm (7.9 in) quill with MT#7, 2,000 mm (78.7 in) of Z travel and 7 kW axis motors, and weighs 15,300 kg (33,660 lb).

For work that is long but not massive, that hardly matters, and the ST-70C keeps the quicker axes of the small frame: 15 m/min on X and 18 m/min on Z.

The drive is 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp), or 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp) as an option, through four automatic speeds. Belt-type gearbox speed is 1,500 rpm as standard; the geared headstock gives 1,200 rpm. Bore is 152 mm (6 in), bar capacity 139 mm (5.5 in), and the tailstock travels 1,300 mm (51.2 in).

Frequently Asked Questions

01 When is the ST-80C a better choice than the ST-70C?

When the part is heavy or longer than 1,600 mm (63 in). The ST-80C has 2,000 mm (78.7 in) of Z travel, a Ø200 mm (7.9 in) tailstock quill with MT#7 taper, 7 kW X and Z servo motors and 700 mm (27.6 in) of swing over the cross slide.

02 What are the main spindle figures of the ST-70C?

A2-15 nose, 152 mm (6 in) bore, 200 mm (7.9 in) bearing diameter, four automatic speeds, 1,500 rpm with the standard belt-type gearbox and 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp).

03 How much does the ST-70C weigh?

13,250 kg (29,150 lb), the most of the small-frame ST lathes. Outside dimensions are 6,482 x 2,290 x 2,765 mm (255.2 x 90.2 x 108.9 in).

04 Which options suit long work on the ST-70C?

Manual or hydraulic self-centering steady rests, a sub-spindle or counter-spindle in replacement of the tailstock, and a boring bar holder on the turret carriage or an independent boring bar system are all on the optional accessory list.
