Overview

With the Johnford ST-200CX a roll shop gets 5,050 mm (198.8 in) between the limits of Z, a metre of swing over the cross slide and a spindle with 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp).

Rolls of this size are rarely made new on such a machine every day; they come back for regrinding preparation, journal repair and re-profiling. That work is a mix of heavy and light cutting. The four automatic speeds handle the spread, from roughing a built-up weld on the barrel at low speed to skimming a journal near the 1,500 rpm limit.

Repair work also makes the options relevant. Steady rests in manual or hydraulic self-centering form carry a long roll while a journal is cut, and a tool touch probe and workpiece measuring are not on the ST list, so in-process measurement would be a matter for discussion with Johnford.

Tailstock travel is 4,600 mm (181.1 in) with a Ø200 mm (7.9 in) MT#7 quill. The chuck is 510 mm (20.1 in), or 610 mm (24 in). X travel is 520 mm (20.5 in). The machine weighs 28,500 kg (62,700 lb) and measures 11,267 x 2,685 x 3,258 mm (443.6 x 105.7 x 128.3 in).
