Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Johnford HT-30-2D that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
Two 12-station turrets cut one part at once on the Johnford HT-30-2D, a 45° slant-bed lathe with a Ø254 mm (10 in) chuck, 550 mm (21.7 in) between centers and a tailstock.
The second turret is what separates the 2D machines from an ordinary two-axis lathe. With an upper and a lower carriage, each with 175 mm (6.9 in) of X travel, a shaft can be roughed from both sides together (balanced turning), or one turret can turn the outside while the other drills or bores. A dual-path control system is standard for that reason. On short parts the gain is cycle time; on slender ones it is also deflection, since the two cuts oppose each other.
The spindle is a one-step unit: A2-8 nose, Ø86 mm (3.4 in) bore, Ø76.5 mm (3 in) bar capacity, 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) and 3,500 rpm. Both turrets draw on that one motor, so two heavy cuts at once split the available power.
Support comes from a programmable hydraulic tailstock with a rotary quill, MT#5, Ø85 mm (3.3 in) in diameter with 100 mm (3.9 in) of quill travel and 530 mm (20.9 in) of body travel. At 7,200 kg (15,840 lb) this is the lightest machine in the HT range.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Two 12-station turrets with 175 mm (6.9 in) of X travel each
- Dual-path control system is standard on the twin-turret machines
- 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) spindle with Ø76.5 mm (3 in) bar capacity
- Programmable hydraulic tailstock with rotary MT#5 quill
- Rapids of 15 m/min on X and 18 m/min on Z
Limitations
- 550 mm (21.7 in) between centers
- No sub-spindle, so the second side needs another setup
- Both turrets share one 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) spindle motor
- Turrets are non-driven as standard

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Twin turrets with a tailstock. The machine has two sets of 12-position direct-mount non-driven turrets, each with its own turning tool holders and its own X and Z axes, plus a programmable hydraulic tailstock. The 2S models have one turret and a sub-spindle instead.
02
Swing over the bed is Ø580 mm (22.8 in) and swing over the cross slide Ø330 mm (13 in). Distance between centers is 550 mm (21.7 in), Z1/Z2 travel 550 mm (21.7 in), and the standard chuck is Ø254 mm (10 in).
03
Yes. A programmable hydraulic tailstock with rotary quill is standard on the HT machines with tailstock. The quill is Ø85 mm (3.3 in) with an MT#5 taper and 100 mm (3.9 in) of travel; the tailstock itself travels 530 mm (20.9 in).
04
Spindle, turrets and tailstock quill are the same. The HT-35-2D is the longer machine, with 800 mm (31.5 in) between centers and 760 mm (30 in) of Z travel, and it weighs 11,000 kg (24,200 lb) against 7,200 kg (15,840 lb).
