Overview

The DN Solutions PUMA 3100 XLY is the extra-long-bed Y-axis variant in the 3100 turning center series. It stretches the Z-axis travel to 1,850 mm (73 in) while retaining the full Y-axis mill-turn capability, giving shops the ability to handle longer shafts and cylindrical components with off-center milling features in a single setup.

The spindle delivers the same 26 kW (35 hp) and 1,123 Nm (828 ft-lb) of torque at 2,800 RPM through a 12-inch (305 mm) chuck. Max turning diameter stays at 376 mm (15 in), but turning length extends to 1,745 mm (69 in) — more than double the standard-bed 3100 Y. That's enough Z-reach for drive shafts, pump shafts, and industrial rollers that would overflow the standard bed.

The Y-axis provides +/-52.5 mm (105 mm total, 4.1 in) of off-center travel. Combined with 5,000 RPM live tooling on the 12-station turret and full C-axis control, you get true mill-turn capability on long parts. Cross-drilling bolt patterns along a 1.7-meter shaft, milling keyways at multiple Z positions, or tapping off-center holes — all done without unclamping.

X-axis travel is 260 mm (10 in), with rapids at 24 m/min on X, 30 m/min on Z, and 10 m/min on Y. The machine weighs 8,200 kg (18,078 lb) — heavier than the standard-bed variant due to the extended bed casting and additional Y-axis hardware. Footprint runs about 5,200 mm (205 in) long by 2,394 mm (94 in) wide.

The FANUC 0i-TF Plus control manages the full X/Y/Z/C axis coordination. The XLY fills a specific niche: shops that need both long-bed turning and Y-axis milling capability in the 3100 class. If your parts are short enough for the standard bed, the 3100 Y saves money and floor space. If they exceed even the XLY's reach, look at the ULY variant.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,745 mm turning length with Y-axis — handles long shafts with off-center features in a single setup
  • Same 1,123 Nm torque and 12-inch chuck as the standard-bed 3100 Y
  • Y-axis with 105 mm travel enables off-center milling, drilling, and tapping along the full Z-axis
  • Live tooling at 5,000 RPM provides productive milling on turned parts
  • 8,200 kg machine mass delivers good stability for heavy cutting on longer workpieces
  • FANUC 0i-TF Plus with full Y-axis G-code support

Limitations

  • 2,800 RPM spindle speed limits high-speed finishing on small-diameter features
  • 5.2 meter footprint requires more floor space than the standard-bed 3100 Y
  • Higher price than the standard-bed variant for the extended bed and Y-axis combination
  • 105 mm Y-axis travel limits the maximum off-center distance for milling operations

Best For

Shops producing long drive shafts, pump shafts, and rollers that need off-center milling features Manufacturers of hydraulic cylinders and valve bodies requiring turned and milled features on parts over 700 mm Production environments running mid-length shafts with keyways, flats, and cross-holes Facilities needing to consolidate turning and milling of long parts into a single machine setup Job shops handling a variety of medium-to-long parts with complex mill-turn requirements

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How does the PUMA 3100 XLY compare to the 3100 Y?

Same spindle, chuck, Y-axis, and live tooling. The XLY extends Z-axis travel from 830 mm to 1,850 mm, increasing max turning length from 725 mm to 1,745 mm. The XLY is heavier (8,200 kg vs 6,050 kg) and about 1.3 meters longer. Choose the XLY for parts over 700 mm long.

02 What does a PUMA 3100 XLY cost?

New machines run $165,000-$215,000 depending on options. The extra-long bed adds a premium over the standard-bed 3100 Y. Used examples from recent model years sell in the $70,000-$120,000 range.

03 Do I need a steady rest for the XLY?

For slender parts with high length-to-diameter ratios, yes. A hydraulic steady rest prevents deflection during turning and is strongly recommended for shaft work over 1 meter long. DN Solutions offers steady rest options compatible with the 3100 XL-series bed.

04 Can the Y-axis be used for contouring or just positioning?

The Y-axis supports full simultaneous interpolation with X, Z, and C axes. You can contour complex milled features, not just position-and-drill. This enables sculpted profiles, off-center pockets, and complex bolt patterns on turned parts.
