Overview
The Johnford ST-40CX is a wheel and ring lathe by its proportions. It joins the 510 mm (20.1 in) chuck of the A2-15 spindle to 1,020 mm (40.2 in) of swing over the bed, and gives the whole arrangement only 800 mm (31.5 in) of Z travel.
Everything about it favours diameter. Swing over the cross slide is 800 mm (31.5 in), which clears the optional 610 mm (24 in) chuck with room for jaws that grip beyond the chuck body. X travel is 420 mm (16.5 in). The spindle bearing is 200 mm (7.9 in) in diameter, and the bore of 152 mm (6 in) lets a ring be bored right through.
The drive is built for large diameters too: 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) as standard, 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp) as an option, four automatic speeds, and 1,500 rpm at the top with the belt-type gearbox. A geared headstock at 1,200 rpm is the alternative for interrupted cuts.
