Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Johnford ST-40B that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
A 381 mm (15 in) chuck, a 132.5 mm (5.2 in) spindle bore and four automatic speeds on an 800 mm (31.5 in) bed: the Johnford ST-40B is the short ST lathe with the middle spindle.
The B spindle is the first in the series with a four-speed transmission. Top speed is 2,000 rpm, lower than the 3,000 rpm of the ST-40A, but the extra ratios keep the motor in its power band over a wider range of diameters. That matters on a machine that swings 600 mm (23.6 in) over the cross slide and may be facing a large flange one hour and turning a small hub the next.
It is also the first spindle with a motor option. The standard drive is 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp); 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) is listed as an option. Nose is A2-11, bearing diameter 180 mm (7.1 in), bar capacity 116 mm (4.6 in). A 450 mm (17.7 in) chuck can be ordered in place of the standard one.
The rest is the small ST frame: 790 mm (31.1 in) swing over the bed, 320 mm (12.6 in) of X travel, a 12-position turret and a programmable tailstock with 500 mm (19.7 in) of travel. Weight is 11,100 kg (24,420 lb).

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The spindle size. B is the A2-11 spindle: 132.5 mm (5.2 in) bore, 116 mm (4.6 in) bar capacity, 180 mm (7.1 in) bearing diameter, four automatic speeds and 2,000 rpm. The ST-40A and ST-40C carry the smaller and larger spindles on the same bed.
02
22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) as standard and 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) as an option. Both drive the spindle through the belt-type gearbox that the accessory list describes as being for heavy-duty cutting.
03
320 mm (12.6 in) on X and 800 mm (31.5 in) on Z, with rapid traverse of 15 m/min and 18 m/min. An optional Y axis adds ±75 mm (±3 in).
04
The ST-40BH has the same spindle and Z travel on a larger frame: 920 mm (36.2 in) swing over the bed, 700 mm (27.6 in) over the cross slide, 370 mm (14.6 in) of X travel and 7 kW axis motors. The ST-40B swings 790 mm (31.1 in) and 600 mm (23.6 in).
