Overview

The Johnford ST-160C carries the A2-15 spindle over 4,050 mm (159.4 in) of Z travel. It is a four-metre lathe for parts that are heavy as well as long.

Motor choice matters more here than on the shorter C models. Standard power is 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp); the option is 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp). A roll or shaft that fills the 700 mm (27.6 in) swing over the cross slide and runs most of the bed keeps the tool in a roughing cut for a long time, and that is the kind of work the larger motor is offered for. Four automatic speeds keep either motor near its rated power as the diameter changes.

Top speed is 1,500 rpm with the belt-type gearbox, 1,200 rpm with the geared headstock. The chuck is 510 mm (20.1 in), optionally 610 mm (24 in), and the bore 152 mm (6 in).

Support comes from a programmable tailstock travelling 3,600 mm (141.7 in), with a Ø200 mm (7.9 in) MT#7 quill. The machine weighs 24,200 kg (53,240 lb), a little more than the ST-160B at 24,100 kg (53,020 lb), and measures 9,926 x 2,504 x 2,895 mm (390.8 x 98.6 x 114 in).

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Which motor should be chosen on the ST-160C?

The table offers 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) as standard and 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp) as an option. Both work through four automatic speeds. The larger motor is the one to consider for sustained heavy roughing.

02 What is the capacity of the ST-160C?

Swing over the bed is 920 mm (36.2 in) and over the cross slide 700 mm (27.6 in). Z travel is 4,050 mm (159.4 in), X travel 370 mm (14.6 in) and bar capacity 139 mm (5.5 in).

03 How does the ST-160C compare with the ST-160CH?

The ST-160CH is the same length and spindle on a larger frame: 1,000 mm (39.4 in) swing over the bed, 800 mm (31.5 in) over the cross slide and 420 mm (16.5 in) of X travel. It weighs 24,400 kg (53,680 lb).

04 What tailstock is fitted to the ST-160C?

A programmable hydraulic tailstock with rotary quill, travelling 3,600 mm (141.7 in). The quill is Ø200 mm (7.9 in) with 150 mm (5.9 in) of travel and an MT#7 taper.
