Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Johnford VTC-650 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Johnford VTC-650 is the odd one out in the VTC series: a vertical turning center with a chuck and two turrets, where every larger model has a work table, a ram and a tool changer. It turns parts up to Ø650 mm (Ø25.6 in) with a swing of Ø720 mm (Ø28.3 in).
A 3-jaw hydraulic 12 in chuck is standard and a 381 mm (15 in) chuck is the option. Tooling sits in two 12-position turning tool turrets, which the table calls a double turret. Two turrets on a vertical spindle mean two tools can be in the cut together, an outside diameter and a bore for instance, or the second turret can stand ready with the finishing tool. For brake discs, hubs, flanges, bearing rings and gear blanks that is the layout that shortens the cycle.
The spindle comes in two versions. The standard A2-8 nose runs to 3,000 rpm. The optional A2-11 nose runs 20-1,700 rpm for larger chucks and heavier parts. Either is driven through an automatic 2-speed gearbox by a 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) motor, with 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) optional, and maximum spindle torque is 841 Nm (620 lb-ft).
Turning height and Z travel are both 720 mm (28.3 in) as standard, or 900 mm (35.4 in) as an option. X travel is 420 mm (16.5 in). Rapids are 12 / 20 m/min (472 / 787 ipm) in X and Z, the Z figure being twice that of the larger VTC models. The machine is compact for a vertical lathe: 3,600 x 2,500 x 3,720 mm (141.7 x 98.4 x 146.5 in) and 11,400 kg (25,080 lb).

Frequently Asked Questions
01
It has a hydraulic chuck and two 12-position turrets. From the VTC-800ATC upward the machines have a work table with independent jaws and a 12-tool ATC for BT-50 tools. The VTC-650 is also the only model with a spindle speed row: 3,000 rpm (A2-8) or 20-1,700 rpm (A2-11).
02
304 mm (12 in) as standard and 381 mm (15 in) as an option. The standard accessory list names a 3-jaw hydraulic 12 in chuck with one set of hard and soft jaws; a 4-jaw hydraulic chuck is optional.
03
Only with options. The standard turrets are non-driven turning tool turrets. Johnford lists a live tool 12-position turret in BMT or VDI for the VTC-650, and a C-axis with 0.001° resolution, as optional accessories.
