Overview

Large fabrications are the reason to choose a Johnford ST-100BX. It turns parts up to 1,000 mm (39.4 in) over the cross slide and 2,400 mm (94.5 in) long with a spindle of 2,000 rpm and 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp).

Welded drums, rolled shells, large fabricated hubs: such parts have plenty of diameter and little solid metal. They need a light finishing cut on a few surfaces, bearing seats, sealing faces and flange faces, and they need it at a reasonable surface speed. A large frame with the smallest, fastest long-bed spindle does that job without the cost in speed of the C and D spindles.

Reaching those surfaces is the task of the X axis, which travels 520 mm (20.5 in) on a 7 kW servo motor.

The table lists the machine at 7,812 x 2,645 x 3,175 mm (307.6 x 104.1 x 125 in) and 16,700 kg (36,740 lb). Tailstock travel is 2,100 mm (82.7 in), on a Ø200 mm (7.9 in) quill with MT#7 taper. The spindle bore is 132.5 mm (5.2 in) and the chuck 381 mm (15 in), with 450 mm (17.7 in) as an option. A 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) motor can be ordered.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What size of part does the ST-100BX accept?

1,200 mm (47.2 in) of swing over the bed and 1,000 mm (39.4 in) over the cross slide, with 2,400 mm (94.5 in) of Z travel and 520 mm (20.5 in) of X travel.

02 Is the ST-100BX powerful enough for heavy roughing?

Its standard motor is 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp), with 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) optional. For heavy roughing at large diameter, the ST-100CX has 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) as standard and a 510 mm (20.1 in) chuck.

03 How heavy is the ST-100BX?

16,700 kg (36,740 lb). The ST-80BX weighs 15,200 kg (33,440 lb) and the ST-130BX 20,300 kg (44,660 lb), so the bigger step is the one to three metres.

04 What are the dimensions of the ST-100BX?

7,812 x 2,645 x 3,175 mm (307.6 x 104.1 x 125 in). A chain type chip conveyor with trolley is part of the standard equipment.
