Overview

Ø90 mm (3.5 in) of bar capacity on linear guideways defines the Goodway GLS-3300. Large-bore lathes are more often built on box ways, so this model suits shops that want the bore for big bar and tube but spend most of their time on lighter, faster cuts.

The spindle peaks at 3,000 rpm. Its motor is rated 18.5 kW (24.8 hp) for 30 min. on both windings, with continuous ratings of 15 kW (20.1 hp) on the high-speed winding and 11 kW (14.8 hp) on the low-speed one. Goodway singles out this 18.5 kW motor in its description of the series.

Ordered as the standard bed, the machine turns 710 mm (28.0 in) between chuck and center. The L bed extends that to 1,210 mm (47.6 in). Z-axis travel is 750 mm (29.5 in) or 1,250 mm (49.2 in), X-axis travel 250 mm (9.8 in), and the largest turned diameter Ø440 mm (17.3 in).

Five variations build on the base lathe: M, Y, S, MS and YS. They draw on a 12-station ER32 or 16-station ER25 live tooling turret at 6,000 rpm, a Y-axis with 100 mm (3.9 in) of stroke, and a sub-spindle that takes Ø51 mm (2.0 in) bar. The sub-spindle is rated 7.5 kW (10.1 hp) continuous and 11 kW (14.8 hp) for 30 min., and Goodway quotes 105 Nm of maximum torque for it. An MT#4 live center tailstock with a Ø70 mm (2.8 in) quill and 150 mm (5.9 in) of quill travel is on the option list.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Ø90 mm (3.5 in) bar capacity on a linear-guideway slant bed
  • 18.5 kW (24.8 hp) 30 min. rating on both the high-speed and low-speed windings
  • L bed gives 1,210 mm (47.6 in) of turning length
  • Optional sub-spindle with 11 kW (14.8 hp) 30 min. rating and 105 Nm of maximum torque
  • Choice of 12-station or 16-station live tooling turret at 6,000 rpm

Limitations

  • Main spindle speed is limited to 3,000 rpm
  • The sub-spindle passes Ø51 mm (2.0 in), well under the main spindle's bar capacity
  • X travel is 250 mm (9.8 in) and turning diameter Ø440 mm (17.3 in), modest for a bore this size
  • Tailstock, Y-axis, live tooling and sub-spindle are all options
06

Best For

Large bar and tube up to Ø90 mm (3.5 in) Long shafts up to 1,210 mm (47.6 in) with the optional tailstock Mill-turn work with 6,000 rpm driven tools and a 100 mm (3.9 in) Y-axis

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the bar capacity of the GLS-3300?

Ø90 mm (3.5 in) through the main spindle. The optional sub-spindle has a bar capacity of Ø51 mm (2.0 in). The GLS-2800, on the same bed, passes Ø75 mm (3.0 in) through its main spindle.

02 How powerful is the GLS-3300 spindle?

On the 30 min. rating the motor delivers 18.5 kW (24.8 hp) on either winding. Continuous ratings are 15 kW (20.1 hp) on the high-speed winding and 11 kW (14.8 hp) on the low-speed winding. Maximum spindle speed is 3,000 rpm.

03 What turning lengths does the GLS-3300 offer?

710 mm (28.0 in) on the standard bed and 1,210 mm (47.6 in) on the L bed. Z-axis travel is 750 mm (29.5 in) and 1,250 mm (49.2 in) respectively, and X-axis travel is 250 mm (9.8 in) on both.

04 Does the GLS-3300 have a Y-axis?

As an option, in the Y and YS variations. Goodway lists 100 mm (3.9 in) of Y-axis travel, ±50 mm from center, and a maximum turning diameter of Ø400 mm (15.7 in) when the Y-axis is fitted.
