Overview

The Johnford ST-40BX is a facing lathe in all but name. It swings 1,020 mm (40.2 in) over the bed and 800 mm (31.5 in) over the cross slide, has 420 mm (16.5 in) of X travel, and its Z travel is only 800 mm (31.5 in).

With the B spindle the workholding grows to match. A 381 mm (15 in) chuck is standard, a 450 mm (17.7 in) chuck optional, on an A2-11 nose with a 180 mm (7.1 in) bearing diameter. The through-bore is 132.5 mm (5.2 in), so ring-shaped parts can be bored through and bar up to 116 mm (4.6 in) can be fed.

Facing a part from a large radius toward the center asks a lot of the transmission, because constant surface speed means a steadily rising spindle speed. The B spindle has four automatic speeds and tops out at 2,000 rpm. The standard motor is 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp). For heavier facing cuts the 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) option is the one to specify.

Rapid traverse is 12 m/min on X and 16 m/min on Z, with 7 kW servo motors. The machine weighs 11,300 kg (24,860 lb) and is 5,132 mm (202 in) long.
