Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Fryer HB-160 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Fryer HB-160 is the largest boring mill in the HB series and, at 48,000 lb (21,773 kg), heavier than the fixed spindle HR-160 at 46,000 lb (20,866 kg). It has 160 in (4,064 mm) of X travel on a 40 x 165 in (1,016 x 4,191 mm) table, with the same 50 in (1,270 mm) of Y, 40 in (1,016 mm) of Z and 20 in (508 mm) of bar travel as the HB-120.
Buying it is mostly a question of building space. Fryer gives operating dimensions of 365 x 160 x 155 in (9,271 x 4,064 x 3,937 mm): the table needs room to travel its full stroke on both sides of the column. Shipping dimensions are 180 x 105 x 105 in (4,572 x 2,667 x 2,667 mm) after some disassembly. The supply is 80 A at 480 VAC.
On the table itself the limits are the familiar ones. Load is 10,000 lb (4,536 kg), evenly distributed, whatever the length. Rapids are 500 ipm (12.7 m/min) and the cutting feed rate reaches 600 ipm (15.2 m/min). Peak axis thrust is 7,500 lb through 3.14 in (80 mm) ballscrews.
Why a boring bar on so long a machine? Because the parts that need 160 in of travel, such as long frames, machine bases and structural members, usually need holes bored square to their length at several points. The 4.330 in (110 mm) bar with its programmable W axis reaches those points without long tool extensions, at 30 - 3,000 rpm and up to 360 ft-lb (488 Nm). A 24 station changer supplies the tools, and the 40" built-in rotary table can be added.
