Overview

The Fermat BUB E is the smallest cylindrical grinder in Fermat's range, for workpieces of 500 / 650 kg (1,102 / 1,433 lb). It is offered with a swing of 320 / 400 / 500 mm, with 600 mm in brackets, and with 1,000 / 1,500 / 2,000 / 3,000 mm (39.4 / 59.1 / 78.7 / 118.1 in) between centers.

Small does not mean short. A 3,000 mm (118.1 in) center distance on a machine in this weight class points at slender work: piston rods, drive shafts, long spindles and similar parts where the challenge is deflection, not mass. Fermat lists automatic steady rests among the equipment the machine can have, and on parts like these they are the option to ask about first.

The wheelhead swivels +45° / -15° manually and the tool count is 1+1. Wheel and motor match the mid-size BHM, a Ø 500 x 80 x Ø 203 mm wheel on 11 kW (14.8 hp), but the standard peripheral speed is 25-45 m/s; the 10-50 m/s range is optional here. Fermat adds that the BUB can be individually equipped with a B axis with multiple tools, a note it does not make for its other manual models.

Working accuracy is given as IT 4. External cylinders, tapers, front surfaces and radii are ground between centers or in a chuck, and a tilting device with a separate spindle handles bores. Control choices are SINUMERIK 828D sl, 840D sl or ONE, or FANUC.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How heavy a workpiece can the BUB E grind?

The table lists a maximum workpiece weight of 500 / 650 kg (1,102 / 1,433 lb). Fermat's description of the BUB says up to 500 kg in total, so the higher figure is likely tied to a particular version; ask which swing and center distance it applies to.

02 What is the difference between the BUB E and the BHM?

The BHM takes 1,500 kg (3,307 lb) and has a wheelhead swivel of +15° / -180° with 10-50 m/s wheel speed as standard. The BUB E takes 500 / 650 kg, swivels +45° / -15° and runs its wheel at 25-45 m/s unless the wider range is ordered. Both use a Ø 500 x 80 x Ø 203 mm wheel and an 11 kW (14.8 hp) motor, and both go to 3,000 mm (118.1 in) between centers.

03 Can the BUB E have a B axis?

Fermat states that the machine can be individually equipped with a B axis with multiple tools. In the standard table the wheelhead swivel is +45° / -15°, set manually, with a tool count of 1+1.

04 Which controls are available on the BUB E?

SINUMERIK 828D sl, SINUMERIK 840D sl, SINUMERIK ONE or FANUC. The infeed of the grinding headstock and the table travel are driven by servomotors and ball screws, and complex surfaces are ground with linear and circular interpolation.
