Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Fermat BHC that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Fermat BHC is the heaviest of the CNC cylindrical grinders built by FERMAT Machine Tool, the grinding company of the Fermat group. It grinds between centers or in a chuck, swings 630 / 850 / 1,000 mm or, with the maker's asterisk, 1,200 mm, and takes workpieces of 4,000 kg, or 5,000 kg where the table again carries an asterisk. Distance between centers is 2,000 / 3,000 / 4,000 / 5,000 / 6,000 mm (78.7 / 118.1 / 157.5 / 196.9 / 236.2 in).
That is roll, shaft and spindle territory: long, heavy parts where the machine's job is to hold size along several metres. Fermat states a working accuracy of IT 4. The wheelhead infeed and the table travel are driven by servomotors and ball screws, and the wheel is a Ø 750 x 100 x Ø 305 mm disc on an 18.5 kW (24.8 hp) motor with a peripheral speed of 10-50 m/s.
The BHC is the manually swivelled version. Its wheelhead turns +30° / -30° and the tool count is 1+1. Internal grinding is done with a tilting device that carries its own spindle. A shop that needs to bring several wheels to the part in one clamping should look at the BHCR, whose wheelhead indexes automatically and carries 3 tools.
Options named by Fermat include an in-process gauge, an axial probe, automatic steady rests, a rotary dresser and a scale on the Z axis. A special version adds a C axis for non-circular shapes. Controls are SINUMERIK 828D sl, 840D sl or ONE, or FANUC.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Workpieces of 4,000 kg, or 5,000 kg in the asterisked version
- Distance between centers from 2,000 mm (78.7 in) to 6,000 mm (236.2 in)
- Working accuracy of IT 4 stated by Fermat
- Ø 750 x 100 x Ø 305 mm wheel on an 18.5 kW (24.8 hp) motor
- External and internal grinding, with a tilting device and separate spindle for bores
- Choice of SINUMERIK 828D sl, 840D sl, ONE or FANUC control
Limitations
- Wheelhead swivel of +30° / -30° is set manually
- Tool count is 1+1; the BHCR carries 3 tools on an automatic B axis
- Fermat does not explain the asterisk on the 1,200 mm swing and the 5,000 kg load
- In-process gauge, steady rests, dresser and Z-axis scale are named as equipment the machine can have, not as standard

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The wheelhead. On the BHC it swivels +30° / -30° and is turned manually, with a tool count of 1+1. On the BHCR it rotates +45° / -225° automatically and holds 3 tools, so several wheels can work in one clamping. Swing, center distance, wheel size and the 18.5 kW (24.8 hp) motor are the same in both tables.
02
Swing diameter is 630 / 850 / 1,000 mm, with 1,200 mm carrying an asterisk. Distance between centers is 2,000 / 3,000 / 4,000 / 5,000 / 6,000 mm. Maximum workpiece weight is 4,000 kg, with 5,000 kg asterisked; Fermat's text says up to 5,000 kg in total.
03
Yes to both, according to Fermat. A tilting device with a separate spindle is used for internal grinding. Between centers the machine grinds cylindrical or conical surfaces with longitudinal feed, plunge grinds with a fixed or oscillating table, and handles more complex surfaces with linear and circular interpolation.
04
SINUMERIK 828D sl, SINUMERIK 840D sl, SINUMERIK ONE or FANUC. Fermat lists an in-process gauge, an axial probe, automatic electric steady rests, a rotary dresser, electric spindles and a scale on the Z axis as equipment the machine can have. A special version has a C axis, a stiffer headstock or a polishing device.
