We do not have a price for the Fermat BHCR that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Fermat BHCR is the B-axis version of Fermat's heaviest cylindrical grinder. Its wheelhead rotates under program control through +45° / -225° and carries 3 tools, so an external wheel, a second wheel for shoulders or tapers and an internal spindle can each be brought to the workpiece without unclamping it. Fermat describes this as an increased ability to grind workpieces with multiple tools per clamping.
For a part that weighs several tonnes this is where the time goes. Re-clamping a roll or a large spindle between operations costs handling time and stacks alignment errors, and a wheelhead that turns to the next tool removes both. Fermat says the B axis can be built with a high-precision ring motor and rolling bearings, and that Teflon guide surfaces are available to minimise stick-slip.
Capacity is in the same class as the manual model. Swing diameter is 630 / 850 / 1,000 / 1,200 mm (24.8 / 33.5 / 39.4 / 47.2 in), distance between centers 2,000 / 3,000 / 4,000 / 5,000 / 6,000 mm, and workpiece weight 4,000 kg or, with the maker's asterisk, 5,000 kg. The grinding wheel is Ø 750 x 100 x Ø 305 mm, driven by 18.5 kW (24.8 hp) at 10-50 m/s.
Working accuracy is stated as IT 4. Control options are SINUMERIK 840D sl, SINUMERIK ONE or FANUC; the 828D sl offered on the manual machines is not on this list.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Program-controlled wheelhead rotation of +45° / -225°
- 3 tools on the wheelhead for multiple operations per clamping
- Up to 6,000 mm (236.2 in) between centers and a 1,200 mm (47.2 in) swing
- Ring-motor B axis and Teflon guide surfaces named by Fermat as available design elements
- 18.5 kW (24.8 hp) wheel motor with a Ø 750 x 100 x Ø 305 mm wheel
Limitations
- No SINUMERIK 828D sl option; controls are 840D sl, ONE or FANUC
- The 5,000 kg weight figure carries an unexplained asterisk
- Wheel motor power is unchanged from the BHC at 18.5 kW (24.8 hp)
- Ring motor, steady rests and gauging are listed as possible equipment, so the base content needs confirming

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Program-controlled rotation of the grinding headstock. The BHCR wheelhead turns +45° / -225° automatically and is equipped with up to three tools, listed as 3 in the table. The BHC swivels +30° / -30° by hand with a 1+1 tool count.
02
Fermat names a high-precision ring motor for the automatic B axis with rolling bearing of the grinding headstock among the design elements the machine can be equipped with, together with Teflon guide surfaces for minimal adhesion, the stick-slip effect.
03
Swing diameter 630 / 850 / 1,000 / 1,200 mm, distance between centers 2,000 / 3,000 / 4,000 / 5,000 / 6,000 mm, and a maximum workpiece weight of 4,000 kg, or 5,000 kg with an asterisk. Fermat's text gives up to 5,000 kg as the total workpiece weight.
04
SINUMERIK 840D sl, SINUMERIK ONE or FANUC. The feed of the grinding headstock and the table travel are driven by servomotors and ball screws, and a special version adds a C axis for precise positioning and grinding of non-circular shapes.
