Overview

Two bed lengths and an optional counter spindle are what the Emco Universalturn 90 adds to the shaft-lathe layout of the Maxxturn 95. Distance between centres is 1430 | 2230 mm and Z travel 1360 | 2160 mm, with bar listed as up to 102 mm and a maximum turning diameter of 500 mm (19.7 in).

The spindle is the familiar pairing on an A2-8 nose: 3500 / 2500 rpm, 33/42 kW and 800/1040 Nm, where the second figure of each pair is the slower, stronger drive. Emco lists a counter spindle with a KK6 interface, one size below the KK8 main spindle. The product table gives no speed or power for it, so those figures have to come with the quotation.

Where this machine clearly moves on is the driven tooling. With the BMT55P turret the drive is rated up to the second values in 4000 / 12000 rpm, 8 / 23.5 kW and 45 / 56 Nm. A milling drive of that power on a lathe turret changes what can be done in one setup: larger end mills, deeper drilling, and less need to pass shafts on to a machining centre. The VDI 40 turret remains for shops with existing holders.

Y travel is -60/+80 mm and X travel 360 mm (14.2 in). An NC-controlled steady rest or tailstock is optional; the tailstock row gives 1,050 mm (41.3 in) of travel with an MK4 taper. The two beds measure 6312 x 2249 x 2162 | 7378 x 2476 x 2355 mm and weigh 11000 | 13000 kg.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Two bed lengths: 1430 | 2230 mm between centres
  • BMT55P driven tools with up to the higher figures in 8 / 23.5 kW and 45 / 56 Nm
  • Counter spindle with KK6 interface available
  • Y axis with -60/+80 mm of travel integrated into the machine structure
  • Bar passage listed as up to 102 mm

Limitations

  • The table gives no speed, power or torque for the counter spindle
  • NC steady rest and tailstock are listed as options
  • The stronger spindle drive is limited to the lower speed in 3500 / 2500 rpm
  • The two beds weigh 11000 | 13000 kg, and the longer one needs a correspondingly long bay
06

Best For

Shafts up to the longer 1430 | 2230 mm bed Shaft and flange parts that need heavy milling at the turret Bar work with stock up to 102 mm in diameter Shops replacing a lathe plus a milling operation with one setup

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What bed lengths does the Universalturn 90 have?

Emco lists two bed lengths, named 1400 and 2200. The table gives 1430 | 2230 mm between centres and 1360 | 2160 mm of Z travel for them, with overall dimensions of 6312 x 2249 x 2162 | 7378 x 2476 x 2355 mm.

02 How does the Universalturn 90 differ from the Maxxturn 95?

The Maxxturn 95 has one bed with 1,430 mm (56.3 in) between centres and driven tools rated 8 / 10 kW. The Universalturn 90 offers a second, longer bed, lists a counter spindle with KK6 interface and raises the driven-tool rating to 8 / 23.5 kW.

03 What turrets are available?

A VDI 40 or a BMT55P turret, each with 12 stations that can all be driven. The table pairs the driven-tool figures as 4000 / 12000 rpm, 8 / 23.5 kW and 45 / 56 Nm, VDI 40 first and BMT55P second.

04 Does the Universalturn 90 have a tailstock?

An NC-controlled steady rest or tailstock is listed as an option. The tailstock rows give an MK4 taper and 1,050 mm (41.3 in) of automatic travel. A machine ordered with the counter spindle uses that end of the bed differently, so confirm the layout.
