Overview

The Emco Universalturn 50 is sold in three versions, and the drive train changes with them. The M and MY machines have a belt-driven main spindle with VDI 30 (M+MY) tooling. The SMY machine has direct-drive spindles at both ends and a BMT45P turret. The torque row says as much: 197 Nm (belt drive M+MY) / 146 Nm (direct drive SMY). All versions run to 6,200 rpm on a DIN 55026 KK5 nose and pass bar listed as 50 / 50.8 mm through a 59 mm (2.3 in) bore.

So the versions suit different work. The belt-drive machines put more torque at the chuck for single-spindle turning and carry a VDI turret with 6 driven stations at 5,000 rpm, 4 kW (5.4 hp) and 16 Nm (11.8 lb-ft). The SMY trades some spindle torque for a counter spindle and a turret that drives all 12 stations at 0-12,000 rpm with 8.8 kW (11.8 hp) and 21 Nm (15.5 lb-ft), which is the better fit for milled bar parts finished on both ends.

Travels are 175 mm (6.9 in) in X, +40/-40 mm in Y and 510 mm (20.1 in) in Z, and the maximum turning diameter is 200 mm (7.9 in). Feed force is 4000 / 4000 / 6000 N in X, Y and Z. Emco points to an absolute measuring system, so no reference run is needed after power-up, and to a cast machine bed.

Automation ranges from an integrated swivel loader to gantry systems. The control is the SINUMERIK ONE, and Emco states that a FANUC 0i plus control is optionally available from 2026.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Belt-drive M and MY versions and a direct-drive SMY version with counter spindle
  • Integrated Y axis with +40/-40 mm of travel
  • BMT45P turret drives 12 tools at 0-12,000 rpm with 8.8 kW (11.8 hp)
  • Absolute measuring system: no reference point homing
  • Swivel loader or gantry automation available

Limitations

  • Maximum turning diameter is 200 mm (7.9 in), small for a 430 mm (16.9 in) swing
  • The VDI turret of the M and MY versions drives only 6 stations
  • The SMY has less main spindle torque than the belt-drive versions: 197 Nm (belt drive M+MY) / 146 Nm (direct drive SMY)
  • The table gives no spindle power figure and no machine weight

Best For

Bar work up to 50 / 50.8 mm Complete machining on main and counter spindle with the SMY version Small batches down to single parts Milled and drilled turned parts using the Y axis

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the versions of the Universalturn 50?

The table distinguishes M and MY machines, with a belt-driven main spindle and VDI 30 turret, from the SMY machine with direct-drive main and counter spindles and a BMT45P turret. Overall dimensions differ too: 3320 x 2350 x 2100 mm (M+MY) / 3500 x 2600 x 2100 (SMY).

02 What bar size does the Universalturn 50 take?

The bar diameter row reads 50 / 50.8 mm and the spindle bore is 59 mm (2.3 in). Emco describes the machine as built for complete machining of bars up to 51 mm bore.

03 How do the two turrets differ?

The VDI 30 turret has 12 stations, 6 of them driven, at 5,000 rpm, 4 kW (5.4 hp) and 16 Nm (11.8 lb-ft). The BMT45P turret drives all 12 stations at 0-12,000 rpm with 8.8 kW (11.8 hp) and 21 Nm (15.5 lb-ft).

04 Which control does the Universalturn 50 use?

The SINUMERIK ONE. Emco adds that a FANUC 0i plus control is optionally available from 2026, so buyers who standardise on that control should ask about timing.
