Overview

The Danobat DANUNI-3050 is a gap bed cylindrical grinder for aircraft landing gear, sized by the Ø3,050 mm (Ø120 in) it swings over the gap. Landing gear legs carry lugs, torque arms and side stays that stick out a long way from the axis being ground. The gap is there so those can rotate clear of the bed while the journal itself is quite small.

That explains a set of figures that look mismatched on any other grinder. Swing over the table is Ø900 mm (Ø35.4 in), less than a third of the swing over the gap. Distance between centers is 3,380 mm (133 in). Weight between centers is 1,500 kg (3,307 lb), light for a machine with this swing, because the part is long and awkward but not massive. The gap width is 500 mm (19.6 in) as listed, with an optional CNC moving gap that the table gives as 0 to 1,150 mm (0 to 45.2 in).

The wheelhead is modest by heavy-grinder standards: a Ø915 mm (Ø36 in) wheel, 20 kW (26.8 hp) and a maximum peripheral speed of 60 m/s (11,811 sfpm). Landing gear work is finishing of hard coatings to tight tolerance, not stock removal. Danobat cites grinding of HVOF tungsten carbide, chrome and plating, a system for conditioning vitrified diamond wheels, and ID, face and OD grinding, superfinishing and mild turning of ODs, IDs and threads.

An unbalanced part swinging through a three-metre circle makes workholding the hard part of the job, and Danobat says as much about clamping and balancing. The larger DANUNI-4100 swings Ø4,100 mm (Ø161 in) over the gap with the same wheelhead.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Swing over the gap of Ø3,050 mm (Ø120 in) clears the offset features of landing gear legs
  • Optional CNC moving gap, listed as 0 to 1,150 mm (0 to 45.2 in), in place of the 500 mm (19.6 in) gap
  • 3,380 mm (133 in) between centers
  • Process range covers ID, face and OD grinding, superfinishing and mild OD, ID and thread turning
  • MDM in- and post-process gauge produces metrological reports and scans slender parts

Limitations

  • Weight between centers is 1,500 kg (3,307 lb), no more than on the larger DANUNI-4100
  • Swing over the table is only Ø900 mm (Ø35.4 in), against Ø1,600 mm (Ø63 in) on the DANUNI-4100
  • Wheelhead is 20 kW (26.8 hp) at 60 m/s (11,811 sfpm), set up for finishing and coatings
  • The CNC moving gap is an option, so the base machine has the 500 mm (19.6 in) gap

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does the number in the DANUNI-3050 name refer to?

The swing over the gap, Ø3,050 mm (Ø120 in). It is the diameter of the circle the part's furthest feature can sweep where the bed is cut away. Away from the gap, the swing over the table is Ø900 mm (Ø35.4 in).

02 How wide is the gap on the DANUNI-3050?

The table gives 500 mm (19.6 in), and marks a second entry of 0 to 1,150 mm (0 to 45.2 in) as an optional CNC moving gap. A moving gap lets the cut-away section be positioned to suit each landing gear type instead of sitting at a fixed place on the bed.

03 What materials and coatings is the DANUNI-3050 meant to grind?

Danobat states experience in grinding all types of coatings on landing gear, naming HVOF tungsten carbide, chrome and plating, and offers a system for conditioning vitrified diamond wheels. The wheel is up to Ø915 mm (Ø36 in) on a 20 kW (26.8 hp) wheelhead at up to 60 m/s (11,811 sfpm).

04 How does the DANUNI-3050 differ from the DANUNI-4100?

The DANUNI-4100 is larger in every swing dimension: Ø4,100 mm (Ø161 in) over the gap, Ø1,600 mm (Ø63 in) over the table and 3,750 mm (147.6 in) between centers. The DANUNI-4100 gap is listed as 0-1,450 mm (0-57.1 in). Weight capacity, wheel size, wheelhead power and wheel speed are the same on both.
