Overview

The Danobat WT-72 is the entry size of the WT cross-slide grinders, a design in which the workpiece stays put and the wheelhead does the travelling. Danobat words it as stationary parts with no unnecessary movements and a minimised footprint. The WT-72 comes in grinding lengths of 3,000, 4,000, 5,000 or 6,000 mm (118, 157, 196 or 236 in).

That layout pays off as parts get long. A table-type machine has to move the whole shaft past the wheel and needs clear floor at both ends for the stroke. Here the bed only has to be as long as the part plus workhead and tailstock, which is why Danobat stresses footprint on a machine of this length.

In capacity the WT-72 mirrors the upper versions of the HG-72: Ø640 or Ø840 mm (Ø25.2 or Ø33.1 in) of ground diameter and 1,500 or 2,500 kg (3,307 or 5,511 lb) between centers. It is the wheel end that is heavier. Wheelhead power is 30, 45 or 60 kW (40.2, 60.3 or 80.4 hp), and wheel diameters run Ø760, Ø915 or Ø1,060 mm, the last not available with the B-axis. Wheel speed is 60 / 120 m/s (11,811 / 23,622 sfpm).

Both X and Z run on hydrostatic V and flat slideways, according to Danobat's description of the series. The structure is stress-relieved pearlitic cast iron with coolant channels. Integrated platforms give the operator safe access along the work area, a practical point on a machine where the part may be 6,000 mm (236 in) long. The MDM measuring range is 400 or 600 mm (15.7 or 23.6 in), and the B axis repeats to ±1 µm on a 650 mm (25.6 in) radius.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Cross-slide layout keeps the workpiece stationary and the footprint short for lengths up to 6,000 mm (236 in)
  • Hydrostatic V and flat slideways on both X and Z axes
  • Wheelhead power of 30, 45 or 60 kW (40.2, 60.3 or 80.4 hp)
  • Wheel peripheral speed of 60 / 120 m/s (11,811 / 23,622 sfpm)
  • Integrated operator platforms along the work area

Limitations

  • Weight between centers tops out at 2,500 kg (5,511 lb); the WT-92 carries 5,000 kg (11,023 lb)
  • Ground diameter limited to Ø840 mm (Ø33.1 in)
  • The Ø1,060 mm wheel is not available with the B-axis
  • Shortest version is 3,000 mm (118 in), so it is oversized for short shafts
06

Best For

Long, relatively light shafts: extrusion screws, electric motor shafts, gearbox shafts Printing and packaging rolls up to Ø840 mm (Ø33.1 in) Plants with limited floor length for a 6,000 mm (236 in) part Coated rolls and rods, including HVOF and chrome

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does cross-slide mean on the WT-72?

The wheelhead moves along and across the part while the workpiece rotates in a fixed position. Danobat lists the benefits as a minimised footprint and stationary parts with no unnecessary movements. On a part up to 6,000 mm (236 in) long, not having to traverse the workpiece saves a great deal of floor.

02 What are the capacity options of the WT-72?

Maximum grinding length of 3,000, 4,000, 5,000 or 6,000 mm (118, 157, 196 or 236 in); maximum ground diameter of Ø640 or Ø840 mm (Ø25.2 or Ø33.1 in); maximum weight between centers of 1,500 or 2,500 kg (3,307 or 5,511 lb).

03 How does the WT-72 compare with the HG-72?

Diameters match and the top weight matches at 2,500 kg (5,511 lb). The WT-72 is longer, reaching 6,000 mm (236 in) where the HG-72 stops at 4,000 mm (157 in), and its wheelhead starts at 30 kW (40.2 hp) where the HG-72 starts at 22 kW (29.5 hp). The WT also has hydrostatic ways on both axes.

04 Which wheels can the WT-72 run?

Maximum grinding wheel diameters of Ø760, Ø915 or Ø1,060 mm, with the note that the largest is not available with the B-axis. Dressing options include a dressing disc spindle, a standard chisel diamond holder and a system for conditioning vitrified diamond wheels.
