Overview

The Campro NT-208SM is a twin-spindle turning and milling center: an 8 in main spindle, a 6 in sub-spindle and a 12-station servo live turret with C-axis control, on the box-way slant bed of the NT series. It has no Y axis.

Campro sums up the purpose as synchronized control of the two spindles to complete the greatest possible amount of primary and secondary turning in one compact platform. A part is machined in the main spindle, handed to the sub-spindle with both turning in step, and finished on the back. Add driven tools at up to 5,000 rpm and a C axis indexing at 0.001°, and holes and flats can be put on both ends without a second machine.

The two spindles are sized differently. The main is A2-6 with 11 / 15 kW (20 HP), 4,200 rpm and a Ø52 mm draw tube hole. The sub is A2-5 with 5.5 / 7.5 kW (10 HP) and 5,000 rpm. Heavy cuts therefore belong on the first side, and the second side should be planned as the lighter operation.

Maximum turning diameter is Ø400 mm (Ø15.7 in) and maximum turning length 520 mm (20.4 in). Z travel is 630 mm (24.8 in), against 530 mm (20.8 in) on the plain NT-208S, and X travel is 200 + 20 mm. Rapids are 24 m/min on both axes. The turret takes □25 / Ø40 mm tooling on a BMT-55 interface, with a 2.2 / 3.7 kW servo motor for the live tools.

The footprint is 4,254 x 2,256 x 1,842 mm (W x D x H). Weight is 4,700 kg (10,361 lb) and power capacity 25 kVA.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 8 in main spindle and 6 in sub-spindle with synchronized control
  • 12-station servo live turret, BMT-55, with driven tools to 5,000 rpm
  • C axis indexing at 0.001°
  • 24 / 24 m/min rapids in X / Z
  • Compact for a twin-spindle machine: 4,700 kg (10,361 lb) and 25 kVA

Limitations

  • No Y axis; off-centre features need the NT-208SY
  • Sub-spindle motor is 5.5 / 7.5 kW (10 HP), half the main spindle rating
  • Turret servo motor of 2.2 / 3.7 kW keeps milling light
  • No tailstock, so long shafts cannot be centre-supported
06

Best For

Parts turned and drilled on both ends in one cycle Bar-fed production with automatic transfer to the sub-spindle Fittings, couplings and small housings with cross holes Shops replacing two lathe operations and a drilling operation

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What do the two spindles of the NT-208SM offer?

The main spindle is A2-6 with an 8 in chuck, 11 / 15 kW (20 HP) and 4,200 rpm. The sub-spindle is A2-5 with a 6 in chuck, 5.5 / 7.5 kW (10 HP) and 5,000 rpm. Campro describes synchronized control of the two for primary and secondary turning on one platform.

02 Can the NT-208SM mill and drill?

Yes. It has a servo live turret with 12 stations on a BMT-55 interface, a maximum tool speed of 5,000 rpm and a 2.2 / 3.7 kW turret servo motor, with C-axis indexing of 0.001°. There is no Y axis, so features lie on the spindle centreline or are placed with the C axis.

03 How does the NT-208SM differ from the NT-208SY?

The NT-208SY adds a Y axis with 100 (±50) mm of travel and is taller, at 4,254 x 2,141 x 2,381 mm, with a 30 kVA power capacity. The NT-208SM has no Y axis, needs 25 kVA and rapids at 24 / 24 m/min in X / Z.

04 What is the turning capacity of the NT-208SM?

Maximum turning diameter is Ø400 mm (Ø15.7 in) and maximum turning length 520 mm (20.4 in). Swing over the bed is Ø660 mm (Ø25.9 in) and over the carriage Ø460 mm (Ø18.1 in). The hole through the draw tube is Ø52 mm (Ø2.04 in).
