Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Bourn & Koch 400H that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Bourn & Koch 400H is a 7 axis horizontal CNC gear hobber for gears and splined shafts up to 400 mm (15.7 in) in diameter and 6.4 Module. Maximum axial travel is 1,250 mm (49.2 in). It is the one H-Series model listed with seven CNC axes; the 100H below it and the 600H above it are both 6 axis machines.
This is a different class of machine from the next size down, not a stretched version of it. Against the 100H, spindle power goes from 2.5 kW (3.4 hp) to 15 kW (20.1 hp) and maximum hob diameter from 101 mm (4.0 in) to 203 mm (8.0 in). Speeds fall to suit the larger tools: the hob runs at 20-375 rpm and the work spindle at 0-80 rpm. Weight is approximately 16,000 lb (7,258 kg).
The standard build is fuller than on the smaller hobbers. An integral direct-drive work spindle, a CNC operated tail center, a programmable Y-axis, automatic lubrication and speed and feed change in-cut are all on the standard feature list. Hob shift is 200 mm (7.9 in) against a maximum hob length of 215 mm (8.5 in), and the hob swivel is power-programmable over +/- 45 deg.
Control is a Fanuc 0i CNC with the Bourn & Koch HMI. Options to settle early include the chiller for cooling the integral C-axis motor, a quick change hob arbor clamp, an adjustable roller steadyrest for long shafts, an extended bed, a chip conveyor and a mist collector. For shops replacing older mechanical hobbers, Bourn & Koch says the workspindle bolt pattern on the 100H and 400H is designed so that Barber-Colman tooling can be reused.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 7 axis CNC gear hobbing with a programmable Y-axis and a CNC operated tail center as standard
- 15 kW (20.1 hp) of spindle power for pitches up to 6.4 Module
- 1,250 mm (49.2 in) of maximum axial travel, with an extended bed on the option list
- Integral direct-drive work spindle and automatic lubrication are standard features
- Power-programmable CNC hob swivel with a +/- 45 deg. range
Limitations
- Hob shift of 200 mm (7.9 in) is less than the 215 mm (8.5 in) maximum hob length
- Work spindle speed is limited to 0-80 rpm, so small fine-pitch parts cycle faster on the 100H at 0-750 rpm
- The chiller for the integral C-axis motor, the chip conveyor and the mist collector are optional equipment
- At approximately 16,000 lb (7,258 kg) it needs rigging and floor planning that the bench-scale hobbers do not

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Up to 400 mm (15.7 in) in workpiece diameter and 6.4 Module, with a maximum axial travel of 1,250 mm (49.2 in). The largest hob is 203 mm (8.0 in) in diameter and 215 mm (8.5 in) long. An extended bed length is listed as optional equipment.
02
The 600H is larger in diameter and pitch: 600 mm (23.6 in) and 12 module, with 2,400 mm (94.5 in) of axial travel. Both have 15 kW (20.1 hp) of spindle power. The 400H is the faster of the two, with a work spindle speed of 0-80 rpm against 40 rpm, and it is listed as a 7 axis machine where the 600H is 6 axis.
03
Fanuc 0i CNC control, 7 axis CNC control, programmable Y-axis, integral direct-drive work spindle, CNC operated tail center, automatic lubrication, speed and feed change in-cut, automatic hob shift, power-programmable CNC hob swivel, the Bourn & Koch HMI and a full machine enclosure.
04
Yes. Bourn & Koch lists crown hobbing or taper hobbing cycles for the 400H, together with automatic single or double-cut cycles that change speed and feed between cuts. The automatic hob shifter keeps a parts per shift counter across 200 mm (7.9 in) of hob shift.
05
Bourn & Koch states standard production of AGMA class 9-10 gears on the 400H. The bed has anti-friction hardened and ground ways, and the composite bed uses concrete polymer for vibration dampening. The machine cuts external spur and helical gears.
