Bourn & Koch 25H — price

Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the Bourn & Koch 25H that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from Bourn & Koch or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

The Bourn & Koch 25H is the smallest of the four H-Series horizontal CNC gear hobbers, a compact machine for fine-pitch work. It takes workpieces up to 25 mm (1.0 in) in diameter, has a pitch range of 1 Module and offers 178 mm (7.0 in) of axial travel. That places it with small pinions, splined shafts and miniature gearing, not with general power-transmission gears.

Everything at the hob end is sized to match. The hob can be up to 31.75 mm (1.25 in) in diameter and 31.75 mm (1.25 in) wide, and it runs from 750 to 3,000 rpm, double the 1,500 rpm upper limit of the 100H. Small hobs need that speed to reach a useful cutting speed. Hob shift is 25.4 mm (1.0 in), handled by an automatic hob shifter with a parts per shift counter, and the work spindle turns at up to 400 rpm.

Two things besides size separate the 25H from its larger siblings. It is listed as 4 axis CNC gear hobbing, and the hob swivel is set by hand: a manual hob swivel with a maximum of 30 deg. +/-, where the 100H has a power-programmable CNC swivel. A shop that changes helix angle often will notice that at every setup. Lubrication is manual grease as well.

Control is a Fanuc 0i CNC with Bourn & Koch's conversational HMI on a touch-screen PC front end. Cycles include automatic single or double cut with speed and feed change between cuts, plus crown and taper hobbing. Only two options are listed, a NUM Flexium CNC control and a loading/unloading system. The machine weighs approximately 900 lb (408 kg), on a stress-relieved steel weldment base with polymer concrete, and the maker says it hobs without hydraulics.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Hob speed range of 750 to 3,000 rpm suits small hobs up to 31.75 mm (1.25 in) in diameter
  • Automatic hob shifter with parts per shift counter across 25.4 mm (1.0 in) of hob shift
  • Crown hobbing and taper hobbing cycles are standard, with automatic single or double-cut cycles
  • Fanuc 0i CNC control with conversational HMI as standard; a NUM Flexium CNC control is optional
  • At approximately 900 lb (408 kg) it fits into a small shop or cell without special floor preparation

Limitations

  • Workpiece diameter stops at 25 mm (1.0 in) and pitch at 1 Module; coarser work belongs on the 100H
  • The hob swivel is manual and limited to 30 deg. +/-
  • Axial travel of 178 mm (7.0 in) limits the length of shaft that can be hobbed
  • Lubrication is manual grease to all bearing surfaces, not an automatic system
  • The table for this model gives no hob spindle power figure

Best For

Fine-pitch external spur and helical gears up to 1 Module Small pinions and shafts up to 25 mm (1.0 in) in diameter Crowned or tapered teeth on miniature gears Unattended small-part hobbing with the optional loading/unloading system

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What size gears can the Bourn & Koch 25H cut?

External spur and helical gears up to 25 mm (1.0 in) in diameter, with a pitch range of 1 Module. Axial travel is 178 mm (7.0 in), which sets the length of face or shaft the hob can cover. The hob itself can be up to 31.75 mm (1.25 in) in diameter and 31.75 mm (1.25 in) wide.

02 How fast do the spindles run on the 25H?

The hob speed range is 750 to 3,000 rpm and the work spindle runs at up to 400 rpm. Bourn & Koch's table gives no hob spindle power for the 25H, so ask for that figure if you plan to cut harder materials or the full 1 Module pitch in one pass.

03 Is the hob swivel on the 25H programmable?

No. The 25H has a manual hob swivel with a maximum swivel of 30 deg. +/-. The hob shift is automatic, with a parts per shift counter, and the machine is listed as 4 axis CNC gear hobbing. The larger 100H has a power-programmable CNC hob swivel instead.

04 What control does the 25H use?

A Fanuc 0i CNC control is standard, with Bourn & Koch's conversational HMI on a touch-screen PC front end. The HMI guides the operator through the gear cutting process. A NUM Flexium CNC control is listed as optional equipment, as is a loading/unloading system.
