Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Bourn & Koch 100H that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Bourn & Koch 100H is a 6 axis horizontal CNC gear hobber for shafts and small gears: 127 mm (5.0 in) maximum workpiece diameter, a pitch range of 2.54 Module and 500 mm (19.7 in) of axial travel. It is the second size in the H-Series, above the 25H and below the 400H.
The hob head takes hobs up to 101 mm (4.0 in) in diameter and 152 mm (6.0 in) long, with 2.5 kW (3.4 hp) of spindle power and a hob speed of 100-1,500 rpm. Hob shift is also 152 mm (6.0 in). The automatic hob shifter can therefore work across the whole length of a long hob before it has to come off for sharpening. The work spindle runs at 0-750 rpm.
Setup is where this model moves on from the 25H. Its hob swivel is power-programmable through the CNC over +/- 45 deg., so a change of helix angle becomes a program change instead of a manual adjustment. Bourn & Koch also states that the spindle face is compatible with tooling for the Barber-Colman 6-10 gear hobber, which matters to a shop replacing one of those machines and holding a cabinet of arbors and fixtures.
The standard machine has a Fanuc 0i CNC control with the Bourn & Koch HMI, hardened and ground precision linear ways, a full enclosure and manual grease lubrication. Much of what a production cell needs sits on the option list: chip conveyor, mist collector, automatic loading, steadyrests, deburring wheels and a Fanuc 31I CNC control. Extended bed lengths are optional too. Bourn & Koch states AGMA class 9-10 gears as standard production. The machine weighs approximately 3,230 lb (1,465 kg).

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Power-programmable CNC hob swivel covering +/- 45 deg., so helix angle is set from the program
- Hob shift of 152 mm (6.0 in) equals the 152 mm (6.0 in) maximum hob length
- Work spindle speed of 0-750 rpm and hob speed of 100-1,500 rpm for small, fine-pitch parts
- 500 mm (19.7 in) of axial travel, with extended bed lengths offered as optional equipment
- Spindle face compatible with tooling for the Barber-Colman 6-10 gear hobber, according to the maker
Limitations
- Spindle power is 2.5 kW (3.4 hp); the 400H has 15 kW (20.1 hp) for coarser pitches
- Pitch range ends at 2.54 Module and workpiece diameter at 127 mm (5.0 in)
- Chip conveyor and mist collector are optional equipment, not part of the standard machine
- Lubrication is manual grease to all bearing surfaces

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Maximum workpiece diameter is 127 mm (5.0 in), the pitch range is 2.54 Module and maximum axial travel is 500 mm (19.7 in). Hobs can be up to 101 mm (4.0 in) in diameter and 152 mm (6.0 in) long. Extended bed lengths are listed as optional equipment for longer parts.
02
Bourn & Koch lists the 100H as 6 axis CNC gear hobbing. That includes a power-programmable CNC hob swivel with a range of +/- 45 deg. and an automatic hob shifter with a parts per shift counter over 152 mm (6.0 in) of shift.
03
A Fanuc 0i CNC control with the Bourn & Koch HMI is standard. The conversational HMI guides the operator through the gear cutting process, which reduces the specialised training needed to run the machine. A Fanuc 31I CNC control appears on the optional equipment list.
04
Standard: full machine enclosure, automatic hob shift, power-programmable CNC hob swivel, hardened and ground precision linear ways and a work light. Optional: increased hob RPM range, chip conveyor, mist collector, electronically-operated doors, automatic loading, steadyrests and deburring wheels.
05
Bourn & Koch states standard production of AGMA class 9-10 gears on the 100H and says quality up to AGMA 13 is possible. Cycles include automatic single or double cut with speed and feed change between cuts, and crown or taper hobbing.
