Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Bourn & Koch 1000VBG that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Bourn & Koch 1000VBG is a 4-axis CNC vertical grinder for ID and OD work, with a 1,000 mm (39.4 in) table and 1,100 mm (43.3 in) of maximum swing. It is the vertical grinder of the maker's VBX modular platform, designed around a common base, crossrail and column, and Bourn & Koch says it is based on the engineering of Springfield vertical grinders.
Depth is the figure to check first. Z-axis travel is 700 mm (27.6 in) and the nominal hole depth is 450 mm (17.7 in), so deep bores are within reach but not unlimited; an increased stroke length is on the option list. The table carries up to 4,400 lb (1,996 kg).
The work spindle is a self-contained unit on precision radial/axial roller bearings, driven by an integral liquid cooled torque motor with 140 Nm torque and infinitely variable over 0-100 rpm. Work spindle power is 2 kW (3 HP). The grinding spindle is rated 7.5 kW (10 HP), a modest figure beside the 40.2 hp (30 kW) of the MT³, which points this machine at precision finishing more than heavy stock removal. A CNC rotary swivel axis (B-Axis) is standard, so the grinding head can be set to an angle under program control.
The axes rapid at 7,500 mm/min (295.3 ipm) and feed at up to 1,250 mm/min (49.2 ipm), with the cross slide positioned by a precision ball-screw. Control is a Fanuc 0i CNC with the Bourn & Koch HMI, and a diamond dresser and automatic lubrication are included. A chiller, a contouring rotary table (C-Axis), probing, a roll dresser for CBN or vitrified grinding wheels and integral vertical turning with an automatic tool system are options. Weight is approximately 36,000 lb (16,330 kg).

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- CNC rotary swivel axis (B-Axis) is standard on this 4-axis CNC vertical grinder
- Work spindle driven by an integral liquid cooled torque motor with 140 Nm torque, infinitely variable over 0-100 rpm
- 1,100 mm (43.3 in) maximum swing and 4,400 lb (1,996 kg) maximum workpiece weight
- Optional integral vertical turning with an automatic tool system that stores up to 12 tools
- Base and column are stress-relieved steel weldments with concrete polymer for dampening
Limitations
- Grinding spindle power is 7.5 kW (10 HP), well below the 40.2 hp (30 kW) of the MT³
- Nominal hole depth is 450 mm (17.7 in); deeper bores need the optional increased stroke length
- The contouring rotary table (C-Axis) and probing are optional equipment
- Maximum feed rate is 1,250 mm/min (49.2 ipm)
- Electrical supply is listed as 480 Volt / 3 Phase / 60 Hertz

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Table diameter is 1,000 mm (39.4 in), maximum swing 1,100 mm (43.3 in), Z-axis travel 700 mm (27.6 in) and nominal hole depth 450 mm (17.7 in). The maximum workpiece weight is 4,400 lb (1,996 kg). An increased stroke length is listed as optional equipment.
02
The grinding spindle is rated 7.5 kW (10 HP) and has an integral liquid cooled motor. Work spindle power is 2 kW (3 HP); the work spindle turns at 0-100 rpm, infinitely variable, through an integral liquid cooled torque motor with 140 Nm torque.
03
As an option. Bourn & Koch lists integral vertical turning with an automatic tool system that stores up to 12 tools. A contouring rotary table (C-Axis) and probing are also optional, while the CNC rotary swivel axis (B-Axis) is part of the standard machine.
04
Both grind vertically and both weigh approximately 36,000 lb (16,330 kg), but the emphasis differs. The 1000VBG is a 4-axis grinder with a 7.5 kW (10 HP) grinding spindle and a standard B-Axis. The MT³ is listed as 2-axis with a 40.2 hp (30 kW) grinding spindle and interchangeable spindles for milling and turning.
05
A Fanuc 0i CNC control with the Bourn & Koch Human Machine Interface, which guides the operator through the grinding process. A remote pendant control and a chiller are optional. The machine is listed for 480 Volt / 3 Phase / 60 Hertz power and includes a diamond dresser and automatic lubrication.
