Overview

A 12 in, 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) main spindle and an 8 in sub-spindle, 500 mm (19.7 in) apart at most: the Johnford SL-50A-2S is the heavy short twin-spindle lathe of the SL range.

The first operation is where its strength lies. The main spindle has a Ø115 mm (Ø4.5 in) bore on a Ø160 mm (Ø6.3 in) bearing and a 2 step automatic transmission, the gearbox the lighter SL-50-2S does without. A forged or sawn blank can be roughed hard in the main chuck. The part then goes to the sub-spindle, which has 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) and 4,500 rpm, for the lighter back-side operations.

That asymmetry suits parts with one demanding side: gear blanks with a hub, bevel gear forgings, flanged bearing housings, wheel hubs. It suits bar less well than it might appear. Main bar capacity is Ø91 mm (Ø3.6 in), Ø102 mm (Ø4 in) as an option, but the sub-spindle bore passes only Ø51 mm (Ø2 in), so large bar parts are gripped on a turned diameter for transfer.

Main spindle speed is 3,000 rpm, or 2,800 rpm in the optional configuration. Swing over the cross slide is Ø450 mm (Ø17.7 in), or Ø380 mm (Ø15 in) with the Y-axis.

The machine weighs 6,500 kg (14,300 lb), the same as the SL-50-2S, and is a little longer at 4,675 mm (184.1 in).
