Overview

The Weingärtner mpmc 700 S is the smallest column in the mpmc table: an inclined-bed turning and milling center with 700 mm (27.6 in) of swing over bed and slide and 3,000 kg (6,614 lb) between chuck and tailstock. It is the only model of the range with a single weight class and a single spindle nose, A11 to DIN 55026.

A swivelling B axis carries the tool spindle through ±110°, and the tool interface is a choice of C6, C8 or HSK100. Weingärtner lists three X travels for the vertical slide, 900 / 1,000 / 1,150 mm (35.4 / 39.4 / 45.3 in), and 50 mm (2.0 in) of each lies below the workpiece center. Y, the horizontal slide, is printed as -175 / +175 (+375) mm. The table doesn't say what the bracketed figure stands for, so ask before counting on it for off-center milling.

Speed is where the small frame stands apart. X and Y rapid at 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) and Z at 40 m/min (1,575 ipm), while the mpmc 1000 S, the next size of vertical slide, drops to 25 m/min (984 ipm) on X and Y. Z runs on a rack and pinion with a master-slave drive, not on a ball screw.

What the table leaves out matters as much. No spindle power, torque or speed is given, and there is no turning length, because Weingärtner tailors dimensions and lengths to the order. Injection molding screws and extruder screws head the maker's list of mpmc workpieces, and long, slender parts of that kind are what a 700 mm swing and a 3,000 kg limit suit. The control is SINUMERIK ONE.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Top rapid rates of the range: 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) on X and Y and 40 m/min (1,575 ipm) on Z
  • B axis swivels the machining head through ±110° and clamps hydromechanically at any angle, with no Hirth joint steps
  • Tool interface is offered as C6, C8 or HSK100
  • Three X travels are listed, up to 1,150 mm (45.3 in), on a 700 mm (27.6 in) swing
  • Headstock driven by two AC main spindle motors through an automatic switching gearbox, for turning and milling alike

Limitations

  • One weight class only: 3,000 kg (6,614 lb) between chuck and tailstock, where the mpmc 900 L/S also lists 8,000 kg (17,637 lb)
  • A11 is the only spindle nose listed; every larger model offers a choice of two
  • The maker's table gives no spindle power, torque or speed, so cutting capacity has to come from a quotation
  • Just 50 mm (2.0 in) of the X travel lies below the workpiece center

Best For

Injection molding and extruder screws within 700 mm (27.6 in) of swing Shaft work up to 3,000 kg (6,614 lb) between chuck and tailstock Turned parts that also need milling at angles within ±110° of B Shops that want turning, milling and grinding heads on one machine

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What size of workpiece does the mpmc 700 S take?

Swing over bed and slide is 700 mm (27.6 in) and the weight between chuck and tailstock is 3,000 kg (6,614 lb). The table gives no turning length. Weingärtner states that dimensions and lengths are tailored to individual customer requirements and that special sizes and weights are available on request, so the bed length is fixed in the order.

02 How does the mpmc 700 S differ from the mpmc 900 L/S?

Both list the same X travels and the same rapid rates. The mpmc 900 L/S has 900 mm (35.4 in) of swing against 700 mm (27.6 in) here. The mpmc 900 L/S is also listed with a second weight class of 8,000 kg (17,637 lb) and an A15 spindle nose next to A11. Its Y row reads -275 / +275 (+475) mm; this model's reads -175 / +175 (+375) mm.

03 Which tool interface and B axis does the mpmc 700 S have?

The tool spindle takes C6, C8 or HSK100 tooling and sits on a B axis with a swivel range of ±110°. According to Weingärtner the B axis is moved by two servo motors and held by a hydromechanical clamp that also acts as overload protection in a collision. A direct measuring system gives a positioning accuracy of ±3 arc seconds.

04 How are tools and machining heads changed?

For basic applications Weingärtner uses a chain magazine with an independent shuttle, placed at the headstock or tailstock end, so a tool change can happen at any position along Z, even during machining. Complete machining heads are kept in a pick-up station and exchanged automatically. The heads named by the maker cover HSC milling, bottle boring, trochoidal milling, slot milling and grinding.

05 What control does the mpmc 700 S use?

The table names SINUMERIK ONE for every mpmc model, this one included. Weingärtner adds its own weinCAD programming and production software for operating the mpmc. Spindle data and magazine size are not in the table and belong in the quotation.
