Overview

The Vollmer CS 860 / CSF 860 is Vollmer's fully automated pair for sharpening carbide-tipped circular saw blades from 80 to 860 mm (3.1 to 33.9 in). The CS 860 grinds tooth faces and tooth tops. The CSF 860 grinds the sides. They look alike and share one kinematic concept, and Vollmer describes them as machines with 8-axis or 7-axis kinematics.

Both stand on a monoblock of polymer concrete, and neither has a coolant tank: the coolant returns to an external supply, so there is no sump to clean. Three measuring systems are fitted, a measuring cube for the wheels, a sensor for the tooth and an acoustic sensor for set-up. Up to three machines can be loaded by Vollmer's ND handling system. This is equipment for a blade factory or a high-volume service, not a corner of a joinery.

The CS 860 carries a wheel for each job. The tooth face wheel is 196 to 202 mm (7.7 to 8.0 in) and runs from 17 m/s to 57 m/s; the tooth top wheel is 125 to 127 mm (4.9 to 5.0 in). A separate chip breaker wheel of 26 to 50 mm (1.0 to 2.0 in) and a hollow face unit turning at 35,000 to 60,000 rpm complete the set. Tooth surface angle runs from -35° to +40°, bevels reach 60° on the top, and tooth height differences up to 3 mm (0.12 in) are handled.

On the CSF 860 the side wheel is 72 to 102 mm (2.8 to 4.0 in). Tangential clearance is 0° to +8° and radial clearance -10° (-20°) to +6°, with a cutting edge length up to 30 mm (1.2 in). It draws more power, approx. 7.8 kVA against approx. 4.2 kVA, and weighs approx. 2,850 kg (6,283 lb) to the CS 860's approx. 2,950 kg (6,504 lb). Blades may be up to 14 mm (0.55 in) thick on either.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Monoblock structure in polymer concrete on both machines
  • No coolant tank on the machine, thanks to the coolant return flow
  • Three measuring systems: measuring cube, measuring sensor and structure-borne sound
  • Multi-surface program handles up to 90 surfaces, on one tooth or split between up to 30 teeth
  • Up to three machines can be loaded automatically with the ND handling system
  • IoT gateway is fitted as standard

Limitations

  • Two machines are needed for a complete tooth: the CS 860 for face and top, the CSF 860 for the sides
  • Maximum blade diameter is 860 mm (33.9 in); larger sawmill blades need the 1,300 mm (51.2 in) frame of the CHX 840 / CHX 1300
  • The CSF 860 needs approx. 7.8 kVA, nearly twice the CS 860
  • An external coolant supply has to be planned, since there is no tank on the machine

Best For

Saw blade manufacturers producing in series Sharpening services with a high daily workload Unmanned cells with the ND handling system Blades up to 14 mm (0.55 in) thick with chip breakers or hollow faces

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the CS 860 and the CSF 860?

The CS 860 sharpens tooth faces and tooth tops, including hollow faces, chip breaker grooves, bevels and relief grinding on the top up to 40 mm (1.6 in). The CSF 860 grinds the tooth sides, with tangential clearance from 0° to +8° and radial clearance from -10° (-20°) to +6°. Both take blades from 80 to 860 mm (3.1 to 33.9 in).

02 How many axes do the machines have?

Vollmer describes the CS 860 and CSF 860 as two fully CN-controlled machines with 8-axis or 7-axis kinematics. An optional controlled lateral adjustment adds one axis, turning an 8-axis or 7-axis machine into a 9-axis or 8-axis machine, for saws with a clamp in mixed operation.

03 Which wheels does the CS 860 use?

A tooth face wheel of 196 to 202 mm (7.7 to 8.0 in) at 17 m/s to 57 m/s, a tooth top wheel of 125 to 127 mm (4.9 to 5.0 in) at 11 m/s to 36 m/s, a chip breaker wheel of 26 to 50 mm (1.0 to 2.0 in) at 11 m/s to 52 m/s, and a hollow face tool on a 6 mm (0.24 in) shank at 35,000 to 60,000 rpm.

04 Why is there no coolant tank?

Vollmer uses a coolant return flow instead of a tank inside the machine, and gives the reason that dirt and grinding residue would otherwise settle there. For the buyer it means the filtration and supply sit outside the machine and need to be part of the installation plan.

05 What are the installation figures?

Connected load is approx. 4.2 kVA for the CS 860 and approx. 7.8 kVA for the CSF 860. Both need compressed air at 6 bar (87 psi). The CS 860 weighs approx. 2,950 kg (6,504 lb) and the CSF 860 approx. 2,850 kg (6,283 lb).
