How much does the Tormach 15LX cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Tormach 15LX that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Tormach 15LX is a compact enclosed CNC lathe with a 15 in (381 mm) swing over the bed, offered as a gang tool or a turret machine. Its spindle is rated 6 hp (4.5 kW) continuous and 10 hp (7.4 kW) peak with a maximum of 3,500 rpm, and both axes feed at 360 ipm (9.14 m/min) on EtherCAT servos.
The spindle gives two ways to hold work. Its nose is a D1-4 Camlock mount, for which Tormach recommends a 6 in (152 mm) chuck, and the taper is 5C with a removable insert for collets. Take the insert out and the bore is 1.53 in (38.86 mm). Swing over the carriage is 6.2 in (157.5 mm), with 10 in (254 mm) of X travel and 14 in (356 mm) of Z. The specification lists no tailstock, so long slender shafts are not what this lathe is for.
How the tools are carried is the main decision. Tormach lists an 8-station turret, a gang tooling system and a quick change tool post as options, plus an automatic 5C collet closer, and its Automation package puts the turret, the collet closer and a bar puller together. Typical system weight follows the choice: 1,631 lb (740 kg) as a gang tool lathe, 1,764 lb (800 kg) with the turret. Absolute encoder servos are fitted on every axis, the turret included.
Standard equipment covers the full enclosure, a 21.5-inch touchscreen operator console with built-in WiFi, an air-gun kit and a washdown kit. The supply is 230 Vac single-phase on a 30A breaker through a NEMA L6-30P plug, and the machine measures 54.75 in × 38.12 in × 68.25 in (1,390 mm × 968 mm × 1,733 mm). Tormach's smaller lathe, the Tormach 8L, has a 1.5 hp (1.11 kW) spindle and an 8 in (200 mm) swing over the bed, but it turns faster, at up to 5,000 rpm.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 6 hp (4.5 kW) continuous and 10 hp (7.4 kW) peak spindle power
- 360 ipm (9.14 m/min) maximum feed on both X and Z, with closed-loop EtherCAT servos
- D1-4 Camlock spindle nose plus a 5C taper with removable insert; the bore is 1.53 in (38.86 mm) with the insert removed
- 15 in (381 mm) swing over the bed and 14 in (356 mm) of Z travel
- Full enclosure, touchscreen operator console, air-gun kit and washdown kit are standard
- Optional 8-station turret driven by an absolute encoder servo
Limitations
- Maximum spindle speed is 3,500 rpm, lower than the 5,000 rpm of the Tormach 8L
- Swing over the carriage is 6.2 in (157.5 mm), far less than the swing over the bed
- The turret, gang tooling system, quick change tool post and automatic 5C collet closer are all optional
- No tailstock is listed in the specification
- Requires a 230 Vac circuit with a 30A breaker and a NEMA L6-30R receptacle

Frequently Asked Questions
01
They are the same lathe with different tool carriers. Tormach lists the 8-station turret and the gang tooling system as options and quotes a typical system weight of 1,631 lb (740 kg) for the gang tool lathe and 1,764 lb (800 kg) for the turret lathe. The turret has its own absolute encoder servo. In general, gang tooling keeps tool-to-tool moves short, while a turret leaves more room around larger diameters.
02
A spindle rated 6 hp (4.5 kW) continuous and 10 hp (7.4 kW) peak, with a maximum speed of 3,500 rpm. The nose is a D1-4 Camlock mount and the taper is 5C with a removable insert. With the 5C insert removed the spindle bore diameter is 1.53 in (38.86 mm). Tormach recommends a 6 in (152 mm) chuck.
03
Swing over the bed is 15 in (381 mm) in diameter and swing over the carriage is 6.2 in (157.5 mm). X-axis travel is 10 in (254 mm) and Z-axis travel is 14 in (356 mm). The specification gives no maximum turning length and no distance between centres, so check the usable length with the chosen chuck and tooling.
04
The primary supply is 230 Vac single-phase on a 30A breaker. The lathe is supplied with a NEMA L6-30P plug and requires a NEMA L6-30R receptacle. Tormach's note to the power row says performance is best at 240 vac.
05
Tormach sells an Automation package for it: the lathe with the 8-station turret, an automatic collet closer, a bar puller and a tooling selection designed for automation. The collet closer is the 5C type, and the spindle bore with the 5C insert removed is 1.53 in (38.86 mm). Tormach calls the design automation-ready. How long it runs unattended depends on the bar and on chip control.
