Overview

Live tooling is what defines the SYIL L3. It is a CNC turning center with a 12-station Power Turret that drives BMT55 tools at up to 5,000 rpm, a C axis that indexes in 0.001° steps, and versions with a Y axis and with a counter spindle. Of SYIL's three L lathes it is the one meant for parts that would otherwise need a second operation on a mill.

The turning side is mid-sized. The main spindle carries a 200 mm (7.9 in) chuck on an A2-6 nose, runs to 4,000 rpm and is listed at 11/15 kW (14.8/20.1 hp). Maximum workpiece diameter is ø380 mm (15.0 in). Maximum length depends on the version: 500 mm (19.7 in) on the base machine, 530 mm (20.9 in) with the Y axis and 450 mm (17.7 in) with the counter spindle.

Adding the Y axis changes more than the length. Swing over the carriage drops from ø290 mm (11.4 in) to 200 mm (7.9 in), and the Y axis rapids at 15 m/min (591 ipm) against 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) for X and Z. So the Y version handles off-centre drilling and milled flats, but on smaller diameters over the carriage.

The counter spindle is an option: a 150 mm (5.9 in) chuck on an A2-5 nose, 11 kW (14.8 hp), with speeds given as 1,750/6,000 rpm (rate speed / max speed) and 530 mm (20.9 in) of travel for part transfer. Its through-bore is ø45 mm (1.8 in), narrower than the ø52 mm (2.0 in) of the main spindle. With it, a part can be finished on both ends in one cycle, and SYIL lists an LNS EL65 bar feeder and a parts catcher to automate that.

Without a counter spindle the machine uses a tailstock with an MT4 sleeve, offered as a hydraulic or a programmable servo unit. The base machine weighs 4,000 kg (8,818 lb) and runs the Siemens SINUMERIK 828D.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What live tooling does the SYIL L3 have?

The L3 has a Power Turret with 12 stations. Live tooling is BMT55 with a maximum speed of 5,000 rpm, and the main spindle has a C axis with a minimum indexing of 0.001°. Turning tools use 25 × 25 mm shanks and boring bars up to ø40 mm (1.6 in). Turret tool-to-tool time is 0.2 s minimum and 0.5 s maximum.

02 Is a Y axis available on the L3?

Yes, SYIL's specification gives separate figures for an L3 with Y axis. That version has a maximum workpiece length of 530 mm (20.9 in), a swing over the carriage of 200 mm (7.9 in) and a Y rapid traverse of 15 m/min (591 ipm). Its dimensions are 2,680 × 1,750 × 1,850 mm (105.5 × 68.9 × 72.8 in), larger than the base machine.

03 What are the counter spindle specifications?

The counter spindle has a 150 mm (5.9 in) chuck, an A2-5 nose, a spindle bore of ø56 mm (2.2 in) and a through-bore of ø45 mm (1.8 in). Power is 11 kW (14.8 hp) and speed is listed as 1,750/6,000 rpm (rate speed / max speed). It travels 530 mm (20.9 in) at 30 m/min (1,181 ipm). SYIL lists the sub-spindle and its actuator as options.

04 How does the L3 differ from the SYIL L2?

Both have a 200 mm (7.9 in) chuck, an A2-6 nose and a 4,000 rpm spindle. The SYIL L2 is a two-axis machine with a servo turret, 360 mm (14.2 in) of Z travel and a 300 mm (11.8 in) maximum workpiece length. The L3 has a Power Turret with live tools, 550 mm (21.7 in) of Z travel, and Y-axis and counter-spindle versions.

05 What tailstock options are there?

Two: a hydraulic tailstock and a programmable servo tailstock, each with its own screen on the control. The sleeve taper is MT4 and tailstock rapid traverse is 30 m/min (1,181 ipm). Travel from tailstock to chuck is 465 mm (18.3 in), or 500 mm (19.7 in) on the Y-axis version.
