Overview

Each of the six spindles on the MORI-SAY TMZ642CNC has its own external AC drive. That one design decision defines the machine: spindle speed is set independently per station, any spindle can be stopped or positioned, and the maker goes as far as calling the result a multifunctional machining centre. It is a six-spindle CNC automatic for round bar up to Ø 42 mm (1.7 in), with 5,000 rpm spindles of 7 kW nominal output.

The brochure lists what the external drives avoid. There is no reverse indexing of the drum after six pieces, no connecting and disconnecting of a drive at each indexing, and no drum heating from built-in electric spindles. Idle time is given as 0.7–1 s. Spindle torque is 66.8 Nm at 1,000 rpm on a pitch circle of 340 mm.

Standard motion comprises 26 CNC controlled axes, with a further 22 auxiliary axes available for optional accessories. Six longitudinal slide rests on W1–W6 have a working stroke of 360 mm. Five compound slide rests sit in positions I to V: 160 mm of Z stroke on the first two, 120 mm on the other three, and 80 mm on X. The parting-off slide rest, X6, strokes 66 mm. Compound slides with a Y axis in positions 2, 3, 4 or 5 are optional, as are driven tools, a pick-up spindle and counter-spindles rated 6,000 rpm.

Two Siemens SINUMERIK 840D Solution line controls run the machine through two identical operator panels, with the maker's own TMis technological software to ease programming. Bar range depends on the collet: with the automatic magazine, Ø 16 mm to Ø 48 mm for the SK52BZI HAINBUCH collet. Feed length is 180 mm and bars can be 4,000 mm long. The machine is 4,965 mm long without the bar guiding system, 7,811 mm with it, and weighs 11,750 kg.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What bar capacity does the MORI-SAY TMZ642CNC have?

Stock bar dimensions are Ø 42 mm for circular and Ø 36 mm for hexagonal cross section, up to 4,000 mm long, with a feeding length of 180 mm. With the automatic stock bar magazine the range is Ø 16 mm to Ø 48 mm for the SK52BZI HAINBUCH collet, Ø 15 mm to Ø 45 mm for the SCHÜTTE 42 9112E type and Ø 13 mm to Ø 37 mm for the SCHÜTTE 32 9070E type.

02 Why are independent spindle drives useful?

On a conventional multi-spindle all spindles turn at one speed. Here the maker says each spindle's speed is controlled independently and each can be stopped and positioned, so drilling, turning and milling stations each run at suitable conditions. It also removes reverse indexing of the drum after 6 pieces.

03 Which control does it use?

Two CNC Siemens SINUMERIK 840D Solution line control systems, operated from two identical control panels, with motors and drives under continuous SINAMICS speed control from Siemens. The proprietary TMis technological software was developed to make programming easier.

04 What slides does the standard machine have?

6 longitudinal slide rests, 5 compound slide rests and 1 parting off slide rest, plus one axis for drum indexing with bar feeding in working position 1. Longitudinal rests stroke 360 mm. Compound rests stroke 160 mm on Z1–Z2, 120 mm on Z3–Z5 and 80 mm on X1–X5.

05 How does it compare with the eight-spindle TMZ842CNC?

The MORI-SAY TMZ842CNC has eight spindles at 4,500 rpm and 32 controlled CNC axes, and weighs 16,600 kg. This six-spindle machine runs to 5,000 rpm with 26 standard axes at 11,750 kg. Both use two SINUMERIK 840D solution line controls and TMis.
