Overview

The SYIL G2 is a sliding-headstock (Swiss-type) CNC automatic lathe for bar up to 20 mm (0.8 in), with 26 mm (1.0 in) versions in the same family. SYIL describes it as a compact 5-axis sliding head machine, and its table lists six variants: G2 L205, G2 L265, G2 205, G2 206, G2 265 and G2 266. The figures on this page are the ones SYIL highlights for the G2, with the larger bar size noted where the table gives it.

How long a part can be depends on the guide bushing. With the rotary guide sleeve the maximum machining length is 180 mm (7.1 in) per chucking, and the main spindle is then limited to 8,000 rpm instead of 10,000 rpm. A fixed guide sleeve, listed as optional, extends the length to 220 mm (8.7 in). Run without any guide bushing, the machine is restricted to 2.5D, with a 50 mm ceiling, which suits short, stiff parts.

The tool layout is where a Swiss machine earns its cycle time. For outside-diameter turning the tools are given as 1(□16)+6(□12). Four ER16 stations work the end face, and the radial live tools, 2(ER11)+3(ER16), run at up to 6,000 rpm for cross drilling and milling. The back spindle clamps up to 20 mm (0.8 in), turns at 10,000 rpm and has four ER16 back-machining positions of its own. Driven tools on the back side are optional on the highlighted configuration; SYIL's table shows 4(ER16) back powered tools on the G2 206 and G2 266.

Drilling capacity is modest, as expected at this bar size: 10 mm on the main and back spindles with M10 tapping, and 8 mm with M6 tapping on the radial live tools. Rapids are 24 m/min (945 ipm) on X2, Y1, Z1 and Z2 and 20 m/min (787 ipm) on X1. SYIL quotes spindle runout of ≤0.002 mm and repeat positioning accuracy of ≤0.003 mm.

The machine weighs 2,900 kg (6,393 lb), measures 2,565 × 1,350 × 1,850 mm (101.0 × 53.1 × 72.8 in) and is controlled by the Siemens SINUMERIK 828D. A front unloading device for the sub-spindle is among the listed features.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Main and back spindles both run to 10,000 rpm
  • Rotary guide bushing with 180 mm (7.1 in) of machining length; a 220 mm (8.7 in) fixed guide sleeve is optional
  • Radial live tools, listed as 2(ER11)+3(ER16), at up to 6,000 rpm
  • Back spindle with four ER16 back-machining tools for second-side work
  • Spindle runout of ≤0.002 mm and repeat positioning accuracy of ≤0.003 mm
  • Can run without a guide bushing for short parts up to 2.5D

Limitations

  • Bar capacity is 20 mm (0.8 in); 26 mm (1.0 in) needs the G2 L265, G2 265 or G2 266
  • Main spindle speed falls to 8,000 rpm with the rotary guide sleeve
  • Back powered tools and the deep hole tool holder are optional on the highlighted configuration
  • Radial live tools are limited to 8 mm drilling and M6 tapping
  • SYIL's page prints two different main spindle motor powers, so that figure needs confirming

Best For

Long, slender turned parts from bar up to 20 mm (0.8 in) Small complex parts needing cross holes and milled features Parts finished on the back end in the same cycle Larger production runs of small precision components

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What bar diameter does the SYIL G2 take?

The highlighted G2 takes bar up to 20 mm (0.8 in) through a 25 mm (1.0 in) spindle through hole. SYIL's table also lists 26 mm (1.0 in) bar with a 30 mm (1.2 in) through hole on the G2 L265, G2 265 and G2 266. The back spindle clamps up to 20 mm (0.8 in).

02 Can the G2 run without a guide bushing?

Yes. SYIL lists three modes: no guide bushing, with a machining length of 2.5D up to a maximum of 50 mm; a rotary guide sleeve with 180 mm (7.1 in); and a fixed guide sleeve, which is optional, with 220 mm (8.7 in). With the rotary guide sleeve the main spindle speed is limited to 8,000 rpm.

03 How many tools does the G2 carry?

On the highlighted configuration: external cylindrical tools 1(□16)+6(□12), four ER16 end face machining tools, radial live tools 2(ER11)+3(ER16) and four ER16 back machining tools. A deep hole tool holder with two ER16 positions is optional, as are back powered tools. The G2 L205 and G2 L265 have a different, smaller layout in SYIL's table.

04 What control does the G2 use?

The Siemens SINUMERIK 828D, which SYIL fits as standard on its machines and names again in the G2 feature list. SYIL calls the G2 a 5-axis CNC sliding head machine; the rapid traverse rows name the axes X1, X2, Y1, Z1 and Z2.

05 How does the G2 differ from the SYIL G3?

Bar size and length. The SYIL G3 takes 32 mm (1.3 in) or 38 mm (1.5 in) bar and machines up to 310 mm (12.2 in) with its rotary guide sleeve, where the G2 takes 20 mm (0.8 in) bar and reaches 180 mm (7.1 in). The G2 is the lighter machine at 2,900 kg (6,393 lb), and its main spindle runs faster, at 10,000 rpm.
