Overview

The SW BA 322 & BA 322i is the model SW uses to explain its own naming: BA for machining center, 3 for the size with a 300 mm standard spindle distance, then two spindles and two work tables, and an i for integrated automation. SW prints both names in one column of the BA 3 table, so one set of figures covers them.

Each HSK-A63 spindle has 300 mm (11.8 in) of X, 450 mm (17.7 in) of Y and 375 mm (14.8 in) of Z, with 32 kW and 72 Nm on tap. The speed range is 1-10,000 rpm, and 1-17,500 rpm can be ordered.

Two tables change how the machine is used. While the spindles cut two parts on one side, the other side is outside the work area for unloading and loading. SW's series feature list calls this loading and unloading in parallel to machining time and adds that an integrated loading module is possible. That module is the point of the BA 322i: SW describes its integrated-automation machines as self-sufficient production cells supplied ready for connection.

What does the second table cost? Swing, mostly. The 4th-axis interference circle is Ø 475 x 830 mm, against Ø 575 x 830 mm on the single-table BA 321. For brake calipers, valve bodies and similar compact parts that is rarely the limit.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Two spindles and two work tables: two parts per cycle, with loading during the cut
  • 32 kW and 72 Nm per HSK-A63 spindle at a 300 mm (11.8 in) spindle distance
  • The BA 322i adds integrated automation, delivered as a ready-to-connect cell
  • SW states 50% less energy used per part than a single-spindle machine
  • 1-17,500 rpm speed range available as an option

Limitations

  • Ø 475 x 830 mm interference circle, smaller than the Ø 575 x 830 mm of the BA 321
  • X travel is 300 mm (11.8 in) per spindle
  • Z travel of 375 mm (14.8 in) restricts tool length on deep features
  • Magazine capacity and control are not given in SW's BA 3 table

Best For

Brake calipers and ABS valve bodies in high volume Scroll compressors and impellers made in pairs Lights-out production with the integrated automation of the BA 322i Short cycles where table loading must not stop the spindles

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does the i in BA 322i stand for?

Integrated automation. SW's nomenclature uses the BA 322i as its example: BA for machining center, 3 for size 3, 2 spindles, 2 work tables and i for integrated automation. SW says such machines are supplied as self-sufficient production cells, ready for connection.

02 What are the travels of the BA 322?

Per spindle: 300 mm (11.8 in) in X, 450 mm (17.7 in) in Y and 375 mm (14.8 in) in Z. The spindles are 300 mm (11.8 in) apart. Fixtures have to turn inside a 4th-axis interference circle of Ø 475 x 830 mm.

03 How does the BA 322 compare with the four-spindle BA 342?

The BA 342 doubles the spindle count on the same Y and Z travel, but halves the pitch: its spindles are 150 mm (5.9 in) apart and use the smaller HSK-A40 interface with 18 kW and 17 Nm each. The BA 322 keeps HSK-A63 spindles with 32 kW and 72 Nm for larger parts and heavier cuts.

04 Can the BA 322 run at more than 10,000 rpm?

Yes, as an option. SW's table gives the speed range as 1-10,000 rpm and shows 1-17,500 rpm in brackets, marked optional. Power and torque are listed as 32 kW and 72 Nm per spindle.
