Overview

A universal grinder earns its place when one part needs outside diameters, a taper, a shoulder and a bore ground without being re-chucked, and the Supertec PMG-60 / 100 CNC is built for that. Its wheel head sits on an automatic B-axis and, in the maker's words, carries 2 OD wheels and 1 ID wheel. The CNC indexes the head to bring each wheel to the work.

Two lengths are listed. The PMG-60 CNC has 600 mm (24 in) between centers and a maximum grinding length of 500 mm (20 in); the PMG-100 CNC has 1,000 mm (40 in) and 800 mm (32 in). Swing over the table is Ø360 mm (14 in) on both, and the load between centers is 150 kg (330 lb).

Each length comes as an (A) or a (B) machine, and the difference is the internal spindle. Type A uses a grease spindle of 8,000/15,000/20,000/30,000 rpm with a 1.5 kW motor. Type B has a high frequency built-in spindle rated 40,000 rpm and 6 kW, and its workhead motor doubles from 1.5 kW (2.0 hp) to 3 kW (4.0 hp). Small, deep bores are the reason to pay attention to this choice: the ID shaft diameter range is Ø7~Ø25 mm (Ø0.27~Ø1 in).

The left-hand OD wheel is Ø405 × 50 × Ø127 mm (Ø16 × 2 × Ø5 in), and the OD spindle runs at 1,575 / 1,795 rpm depending on mains frequency. X infeed travel is 275 mm (10.8 in), which leaves room for the swinging head to clear the work. The table names the controller only as 0i-TF.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Automatic B-axis wheel head with 2 OD wheels and 1 ID wheel, so external, taper, shoulder and internal grinding are done in a single setup
  • Choice of ID spindle: grease type at 8,000/15,000/20,000/30,000 rpm (A) or high frequency built-in at 40,000 rpm (B)
  • 275 mm (10.8 in) of X infeed travel with a Ø0.001 mm (Ø0.0001 in) minimum increment
  • The B-axis can be fitted with a Heidenhain or Fagor encoder, according to Supertec's description
  • Coolant is routed through the whole machine by a nozzle system to carry heat and grinding chips away

Limitations

  • Maximum grinding length is 500 mm (20 in) or 800 mm (32 in), shorter than the 600 mm (24 in) or 1,000 mm (40 in) between centers
  • The base wheel spindle motor is 3.75 kW; the 5 kW motor is an option
  • Table swivel is 5° on the PMG-60 CNC and 3° on the PMG-100 CNC
  • ID tooling is limited to shaft diameters of Ø7~Ø25 mm (Ø0.27~Ø1 in)

Best For

Parts needing OD, face and ID grinding in one chucking Long shaft workpieces such as crankshafts, which Supertec names for the series Low-volume, high-variety work that would otherwise move between two grinders Small-bore internal grinding at up to 40,000 rpm on the (B) machines

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the (A) and (B) versions of the PMG-60 / 100 CNC?

The internal grinding spindle and the workhead motor. Type A has a grease-lubricated ID spindle of 8,000/15,000/20,000/30,000 rpm and a 1.5 kW (2.0 hp) workhead motor. Type B has a high frequency built-in ID spindle of 40,000 rpm and a 3 kW (4.0 hp) workhead motor. The built-in spindle is also listed as an option on type A.

02 How long a part can the machine grind?

The PMG-60 CNC has 600 mm (24 in) between centers and grinds up to 500 mm (20 in) of length. The PMG-100 CNC has 1,000 mm (40 in) between centers and grinds up to 800 mm (32 in). Both swing Ø360 mm (14 in) and carry 150 kg (330 lb) between centers.

03 How much does it weigh?

Supertec gives approximate net weights in pounds: 12,346 lb (5,600 kg) for the PMG-60 CNC (A), 13,669 lb (6,200 kg) for the PMG-100 CNC (A), 12,566 lb (5,700 kg) for the PMG-60 CNC (B) and 13,889 lb (6,300 kg) for the PMG-100 CNC (B).

04 What control does the PMG-60 / 100 CNC use?

The specification table lists the controller as 0i-TF and gives no further detail. The wheel head B-axis is CNC controlled, and X and Z each have a 1.2 kW (1.6 hp) servo motor with rapids of 6 m/min and 8 m/min. Ask Supertec which control options are current before ordering.
