Overview

Supertec builds its GP-CNC plunge cylindrical grinder as a matrix: three swings, sold as the G32P, G38P and G45P, each offered in six bed lengths. Swing over the table is Ø320 mm (Ø12.6 in), Ø380 mm (Ø15 in) or Ø450 mm (Ø18 in), and the distance between centers runs from 500 mm (20 in) on the 50CNC to 2,000 mm (80 in) on the 200CNC. One specification table covers all eighteen combinations, and this page follows it.

Most of the machine is common to every size. The wheel is Ø510 × 50~100 × Ø152.4 mm (Ø20 × 2~4 × Ø6 in) at 1,390 rpm on a 5 kW (6.7 hp) motor, the wheelhead infeeds 225 mm (9 in), and the load between centers is 150 kg (330 lb) regardless of length. That last figure deserves attention on the long beds. A 2,000 mm (80 in) machine with a 150 kg (330 lb) limit is meant for slender shafts and rolls, and steady rests appear in the maker's accessory list for that reason.

Length changes three things. Table swivel shrinks from 9° on the two shortest beds to 3° on the longest. The Z axis servo motor goes from 1.2 kW (1.6 hp) to 1.8 kW (2.4 hp) on the 150CNC and 200CNC. Net weight climbs from 5,200 kg (11,440 lb) to 6,700 kg (14,740 lb).

For the wheel spindle Supertec describes a combination of hydrostatic and hydrodynamic bearings in a high pressure oil film, with a pressure switch interlock that prevents start-up until oil pressure is established. Centers are MT 4 with MT 5 as an option, and the workhead runs to Max. 350 rpm.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Eighteen size combinations from one design: three swings up to Ø450 mm (Ø18 in) and six center distances from 500 mm (20 in) to 2,000 mm (80 in)
  • Wheel width can be chosen between 50 and 100 mm on a Ø510 mm wheel body, as the table gives the wheel as Ø510 × 50~100 × Ø152.4 mm (Ø20 × 2~4 × Ø6 in)
  • 225 mm (9 in) of infeed travel with a Ø0.001 mm (Ø0.0001 in) minimum increment
  • Hydrostatic and hydrodynamic wheel spindle bearings with an oil pressure interlock, per the maker's description
  • MT 5 centers are available in place of the standard MT 4

Limitations

  • Maximum load between centers is 150 kg (330 lb) on every bed length, including the 2,000 mm (80 in) machine
  • Table swivel falls to 5° on the 150CNC and 3° on the 200CNC, which limits taper work on long parts
  • The 5 kW (6.7 hp) wheel motor is the same whether the wheel is 50 or 100 mm wide
  • Maximum grinding diameter is below the swing in each size: Ø300 mm (Ø12 in) on the G32P against Ø320 mm (Ø12.6 in) of swing

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What do the model names in the Supertec G32P / G38P / G45P CNC range mean?

The first part is the swing: G32P for Ø320 mm (Ø12.6 in), G38P for Ø380 mm (Ø15 in) and G45P for Ø450 mm (Ø18 in) over the table. The suffix is the bed length. Supertec lists 500 mm (20 in), 600 mm (24 in), 750 mm (30 in), 1,000 mm (40 in), 1,500 mm (60 in) and 2,000 mm (80 in) between centers.

02 What is the largest diameter each swing can grind?

Maximum grinding diameter is Ø300 mm (Ø12 in) on the G32P, Ø360 mm (Ø14 in) on the G38P and Ø430 mm (Ø17 in) on the G45P. In each case that is a little under the swing over the table, so check a part that is close to the limit against the grinding diameter and not the swing.

03 How heavy are these machines?

Net weight depends on bed length: 5,200 kg (11,440 lb) for the 50CNC, 5,600 kg (12,320 lb) for the 60CNC, 5,800 kg (12,760 lb) for the 75CNC and 100CNC, 6,300 kg (13,860 lb) for the 150CNC and 6,700 kg (14,740 lb) for the 200CNC. Gross shipping weight of the longest machine is 8,200 kg (18,040 lb).

04 Which axes are CNC controlled?

Two: the wheelhead infeed (X axis) and the table traverse (Z axis). X rapids at 6 m/min and Z at 8 m/min, with minimum increments of Ø0.001 mm (Ø0.0001 in) and 0.001 mm (0.0001 in). The X servo motor is 1.2 kW (1.6 hp); the Z motor is 1.2 kW (1.6 hp) up to the 100CNC and 1.8 kW (2.4 hp) above it.

05 Can the GP-CNC machines grind internal diameters?

Only with the optional internal grinding attachment. Supertec describes it as hinged and swing-down, with a patented locking device that prevents it from dropping abruptly. The workhead spindle is fixed and rotary, so chucked parts can be ground once the attachment is fitted.
