Overview

The Weldon G300 is a mid-size CNC cylindrical grinder with 11.8 in (300 mm) of swing, a 330 lb (150 kg) workpiece limit and two bed lengths: 20 in (500 mm) or 40 in (1,000 mm) between centers. Worktable travel follows at 27.5 in (700 mm) or 47.2 in (1,200 mm), and machine weight at 11,000 or 14,000 lb (4,990 or 6,350 kg). Only the width changes with length, 111 or 131 in (2,819 or 3,327 mm).

Two wheel packages are listed against one 10 hp (7.5 kW) T.E.F.C. motor: 16 in (406 mm) diameter by 3 in (76 mm) wide, marked (S), and 20 in (508 mm) diameter by 4 in (102 mm) wide, marked (A). The wheelhead is fixed at 0° or 30°. With the same motor behind both wheels, the wider one spreads its power over a longer line of contact, so it buys coverage and not a heavier cut. The wheel spindle runs in a hydrodynamic bearing at a nominal 8,500 sfpm.

Several rows point to varied, general-purpose work. The swivel taper adjustment is +/- 5°, enough to grind shallow tapers as well as to correct for one. The workhead runs as a live and dead spindle at 0-1,000 rpm from a 2 hp (1.5 kW) motor, with a 1.17 in (29.7 mm) through hole. The tailstock quill is hydraulic, with 1.6 in (41 mm) of travel. Note that the two ends use different tapers: #5 Morse in the workhead and #4 Morse in the tailstock.

The slides run on ground Vee & Flat guideways, pressurized. Wheelhead travel is 13.75 in (350 mm) with a 630 in/min (16.0 m/min) rapid, the table rapids at 785 in/min (19.9 m/min), and feed is programmable from 0.000010 to 200 in/min with position feedback resolved to 0.00001 in. The control is a FANUC 0i-TF Plus, the same as on the AGN4, which has a 5 hp (3.7 kW) wheel motor and weighs 4,600 lb (2,087 kg). Supply is 208 VAC, 3-phase, 60 Hz, with 5 scfm of air at 80 psi.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Two lengths on one design: 20 in (500 mm) or 40 in (1,000 mm) between centers, with 27.5 in (700 mm) or 47.2 in (1,200 mm) of worktable travel
  • Swivel taper adjustment of +/- 5° allows shallow tapers to be ground as well as corrected
  • Hydraulic tailstock quill with 1.6 in (41 mm) of travel, and a workhead that runs live and dead
  • Pressurized ground Vee & Flat guideways with a hydrodynamic wheel spindle bearing
  • Fast positioning: 785 in/min (19.9 m/min) on the table and 630 in/min (16.0 m/min) on the wheelhead
  • Carries parts up to 330 lb (150 kg) on a cast iron base, from a 208 VAC, 3-phase supply

Limitations

  • The same 10 hp (7.5 kW) motor drives both the 3 in (76 mm) and the 4 in (102 mm) wide wheel, so the wider wheel has less power per unit of width
  • The wheelhead angle is fixed at 0° or 30°, not adjustable from job to job
  • Workhead and tailstock use different center tapers, #5 Morse and #4 Morse, so centers are not interchangeable end to end
  • Swing stops at 11.8 in (300 mm) and workpiece weight at 330 lb (150 kg)
  • The table does not say what the (S) and (A) wheel markings stand for, so confirm the wheel package when ordering

Best For

Shafts up to 40 in (1,000 mm) between centers on the longer bed Job-shop cylindrical grinding where taper setups within +/- 5° come up often Parts up to 330 lb (150 kg) and 11.8 in (300 mm) swing Mixed work between dead centers and on the live spindle Plants with a 208 VAC, 3-phase supply

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What lengths does the Weldon G300 come in?

Two. Maximum distance between centers is 20 in (500 mm) or 40 in (1,000 mm), with worktable travel of 27.5 in (700 mm) or 47.2 in (1,200 mm). Overall size is 111 or 131 x 147 x 76 in (2,819 or 3,327 x 3,734 x 1,930 mm) (W x D x H) and weight is 11,000 or 14,000 lb (4,990 or 6,350 kg). Swing is 11.8 in (300 mm) on both.

02 Which grinding wheels are listed for the G300?

Two sizes: 16 in (406 mm) diameter by 3 in (76 mm) wide, marked (S), and 20 in (508 mm) diameter by 4 in (102 mm) wide, marked (A). Both are listed with the 10 hp (7.5 kW) T.E.F.C. wheel motor and a nominal wheel speed of 8,500 sfpm. The wheelhead angle is 0° or 30°, fixed.

03 Can the G300 grind tapers?

The table lists a swivel taper adjustment of +/- 5°. That covers correcting taper on a nominally straight part and grinding shallow tapers inside that range. Anything steeper is outside what the swivel provides, and the wheelhead itself is fixed at 0° or 30°.

04 How is the work held and driven?

The workhead is a live and dead spindle with a #5 Morse center, a 1.17 in (29.7 mm) through hole and a 2 hp (1.5 kW) motor giving 0-1,000 rpm, variable. The tailstock has a #4 Morse center on a hydraulic quill with 1.6 in (41 mm) of travel. Maximum workpiece weight is 330 lb (150 kg).

05 Where does the G300 sit among Weldon's grinders?

Between the AGN4 and the Gold on wheel power and weight. The AGN4 has a 5 hp (3.7 kW) wheel motor and weighs 4,600 lb (2,087 kg). The G300 has 10 hp (7.5 kW) and weighs 11,000 or 14,000 lb (4,990 or 6,350 kg). The Gold has 15 hp (11.2 kW) and weighs 15,500 lb (7,031 kg). The G300 and AGN4 share the FANUC 0i-TF Plus control.
