Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Sugino SC-H40 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Sugino SC-H40 is a compact horizontal machining center with a 40-taper spindle in a body 1,440 mm wide. All three axes move the column: 400 mm (15.7 in) in X and 410 mm (16.1 in) in both Y and Z. Sugino gives the required installing space as about 4.9 m² and says the machine is suitable for an automation line.
Because the column does the moving, the 700 × 400 mm table is fixed. It is rated for 700 kg (1,543 lb), and Sugino points out that large fixtures can be installed without the table having to carry them through a stroke. This is a different layout from the pallet-changing horizontal most shops picture: the table in the specification is a single fixed work area, and no pallet changer appears in it.
The spindle runs to 10,000 rpm on 7.5 kW (10.1 hp), and the coolant-through spindle carries the same rating. Sugino describes it as a high rigidity main spindle capable of heavy cutting. Rapids of 60 m/min (2,362 ipm) on every axis are quick for a 40-taper machine, while cutting feed is capped at 10 m/min. Positioning is 0.004 mm in full travel, with repeatability of ±0.001 mm.
The magazine holds 25 tools, or 33 as an option, on BBT40 shanks. Tool to tool time is 1.6 sec, or 2.6 sec in low-speed mode, which applies to heavier tools: the limit is 5.0 kg normally and 8.0 kg at low-speed ATC. Tools can be up to φ100 × 300 mm with a neighbour and φ150 × 300 mm without. A center trough bed carries chips away under the horizontal spindle. The machine weighs 6,300 kg (13,889 lb) and needs up to 43 kVA.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- NT40 spindle with BBT40 tooling in a machine 1,440 mm wide, on about 4.9 m² of installing space
- Fixed table rated for 700 kg (1,543 lb); the column traverses on all three axes
- 60 m/min (2,362 ipm) rapid traverse on X, Y and Z
- Positioning accuracy of 0.004 mm in full travel and ±0.001 mm repeatability
- Tools up to φ150 × 300 mm when the adjacent pockets are empty
- Center trough bed structure for chip flow
Limitations
- Spindle power is 7.5 kW (10.1 hp), modest for a 40-taper spindle
- Travels are 400 mm (15.7 in) in X and 410 mm (16.1 in) in Y and Z, small for the taper size
- Standard magazine holds 25 tools; 33 is the optional maximum
- Tools heavier than 5.0 kg change at low-speed ATC, where tool to tool time is 2.6 sec
- Power capacity of up to 43 kVA on a 3-phase AC 200V supply

Frequently Asked Questions
01
X travel is 400 mm (15.7 in), and Y and Z are 410 mm (16.1 in) each, all by column traverse. The table working area is 700 × 400 mm (27.6 × 15.7 in) with an allowable load of 700 kg (1,543 lb).
02
An NT40 spindle that runs to 10,000 rpm with 7.5 kW (10.1 hp). The coolant through version has the same speed and power in the maker's table. Tool shanks are BBT40 with MAS P40T-1 pull studs, and Sugino describes the main spindle as high rigidity and capable of heavy cutting.
03
The magazine holds 25 tools as standard and 33 as an option, with memory random selection. Tool to tool time is 1.6 sec, or 2.6 sec in low-speed mode. Maximum tool weight is 5.0 kg, or 8.0 kg at low-speed ATC, and maximum size is φ100 × 300 mm with an adjacent tool or φ150 × 300 mm without.
04
The machine measures 1,440 × 3,400 × 2,140 mm (56.7 × 133.9 × 84.3 in) in width, length and height. Sugino states the required installing space as about 4.9 m². Weight is 6,300 kg (13,889 lb) and power capacity is up to 43 kVA at 3-phase AC 200V.
05
The SC-H40 is the #40 machine: an NT40 spindle at 10,000 rpm and 6,300 kg (13,889 lb). The SC-H30a uses BBT30 tooling at 12,000 rpm, weighs 4,700 kg (10,362 lb), moves its table in Z over 500 mm (19.7 in) and can hold 71 tools as an option. The SC-H40 moves the column on all axes and keeps the table fixed.
