Overview

The ShopSabre IS 408 is the 4x8 size of ShopSabre's Industrial Series, a ball screw router that lists a 2,100 ipm (53.3 m/min) rapid speed and a 65 x 100 x 12 in (1,651 x 2,540 x 305 mm) cut area. Speed is the headline difference from the PRO 408, which shares the layout but lists 1,200 ipm.

On nested sheet work that difference shows up between cuts. A cabinet nest is hundreds of short moves from one part to the next, and the faster the gantry repositions, the more sheets come off the table in a shift. The IS backs the speed with a stacked, one-piece welded steel frame, oversized ball screws on X, dual Y and Z, and AC servo motors with glass encoders. Positional repeatability is +/- 0.001 in (0.025 mm). ShopSabre stresses that there is no rack-and-pinion drive anywhere on the machine.

The Well Equipped package is specified for production. It lists a 10 hp / 12 hp electric fan-cooled tool-change spindle with 12 tool positions on ISO30 holders, a Z-axis brake with fail-safe protection, a 4-zone phenolic vacuum-ready tabletop and pop-up reference pins. A 13 hp HSK spindle appears on the options list for shops that want the stiffer tool interface.

The IS 408 is 88 x 133 x 93 in (2,235 x 3,378 x 2,362 mm) overall. That is 88 in across where the PRO 408 is 80 in, for 65 in of cutting width where the PRO 408 has 60 in. Z travel is 16 in (406 mm) with 12 in (305 mm) of clearance. Control is ShopSabre's own onboard system with integrated WINCNC hardware and software, run from a rolling operator tower.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 2,100 ipm (53.3 m/min) rapid speed on a ball screw machine
  • 65 x 100 in (1,651 x 2,540 mm) cutting area, wider than a 4x8 sheet by a useful margin
  • Well Equipped package lists a 10 hp / 12 hp tool-change spindle with 12 ISO30 tool positions
  • Z-axis brake system with fail-safe protection
  • 13 hp HSK spindle available as an option

Limitations

  • 88 x 133 in (2,235 x 3,378 mm) footprint is wider than the PRO 408 for the same sheet size
  • A 10 hp / 12 hp spindle and the vacuum pump both need a matching electrical supply, which the table does not state
  • Vacuum pump is chosen from the options list, not included in the listed package
  • No machine weight is published for the IS Series

Best For

Production nesting of 4x8 cabinet and closet parts Shops running many short parts per sheet, where rapid speed sets the cycle Heavy cuts in hardwood, solid surface and aluminum Multi-tool door and drawer programs using 12 tool positions

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How fast is the ShopSabre IS 408?

The listed rapid speed is 2,100 ipm (53.3 m/min). ShopSabre's table does not give a maximum cutting feed, which in practice depends on the spindle, the tool and the material. For comparison, the PRO 408 lists a 1,200 ipm rapid speed.

02 What control does the IS 408 use?

ShopSabre's onboard computer system with integrated WINCNC controller hardware and software, on a rolling operator control tower with a PC, networking and USB file management. A touch screen is an upgrade. Buyers who want the M80 control instead should look at the IS-M 408.

03 What spindle and tool changer are fitted?

The Well Equipped package lists a 10 hp / 12 hp electric fan-cooled auto tool changer spindle with 12 tool positions, 12 ISO30 tool holders and ER32 collets. Options include manual-change HSD spindles in 4 hp or 9.3 hp and tool changer systems with a 5 hp ISO, 10 hp ISO or 13 hp HSK spindle.

04 What is the cut area and Z capacity of the IS 408?

The cut area is 65 x 100 x 12 in (1,651 x 2,540 x 305 mm). Z travel is 16 in (406 mm) and gantry clearance is 12 in (305 mm) as standard. Overall machine size is 88 x 133 x 93 in (2,235 x 3,378 x 2,362 mm).
