Overview
The Mazak SLANT TURN 550M is the milling-equipped variant of the SLANT TURN 550, combining the massive 10.83-inch spindle bore and 21-inch chuck platform with live tooling and C-axis capability. This enables done-in-one processing of large parts that would otherwise require separate lathe and machining center setups -- a significant advantage when the workpieces weigh hundreds or thousands of pounds and crane moves between machines are costly and time-consuming.
The SLANT TURN 550M shares the same core platform as the 550: 910 mm (35.83 in) maximum turning diameter, 275 mm (10.83 in) spindle bore, and 45 kW (60 hp) spindle at up to 1,200 RPM. Turning lengths range from 1,051 mm (41.38 in) on the short bed to 4,068 mm (160.16 in) on the extra-long bed, with medium and long configurations at 2,044 mm (80.47 in) and 3,179 mm (125.16 in).
The BMT live tooling turret with C-axis adds cross-drilling, tapping, bolt-hole patterns, keyway cutting, and contour milling capability. The live tool motor delivers approximately 5.5 kW (7.4 hp) at up to 4,000 RPM, suitable for drilling and tapping operations on large turned parts. The C-axis provides angular positioning for feature placement around the workpiece circumference.
MAZATROL SmoothG integrates turning and milling programming in a single conversational interface. The control handles C-axis positioning, live tool speed, and coordinate system management for mixed operations.
The SLANT TURN 550M competes with the Okuma LB6000 EX MY, Doosan Puma 700M, and DMG Mori NLX 6000 MY. New machines price between $320,000 and $500,000 depending on bed length and options.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 10.83-inch bore with BMT live tooling enables complete processing of large pipe and tubular parts in one setup
- C-axis and live tooling eliminate crane moves to a machining center for cross-drilling, tapping, and keyways
- 45 kW spindle delivers massive torque for aggressive roughing at large diameters
- Four bed lengths up to 160 inches accommodate everything from short flanges to long shafts
- 21-inch minimum chuck provides secure workholding for heavy, large-diameter workpieces
- MAZATROL SmoothG integrates turning and milling programming in one conversational interface
Limitations
- 1,200 RPM max spindle speed limits surface speed significantly on smaller-diameter features
- 15,000 kg machine weight requires heavy-duty foundation and crane infrastructure
- $40K-$60K premium over the base 550 for live tooling may not be justified for pure turning work
- Live tool power at 5.5 kW limits heavy milling; for aggressive milling, consider INTEGREX series

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New pricing ranges from $320,000 for the short-bed to $500,000 for the extra-long bed with options. The M variant adds $40,000-$60,000 over the base SLANT TURN 550 for live tooling, C-axis, and milling motor.
02
Cross-drilling, tapping, bolt-hole circle patterns, keyway cutting, flat milling, and contouring using BMT live tooling with C-axis. The 5.5 kW motor handles typical secondary operations but heavy 3D surfacing still needs a machining center.
03
The 600M has a 14.76-inch spindle bore vs the 550M at 10.83 inches. Both use 21-inch minimum chucks and share the same 35.83-inch turning diameter. Step up to the 600M only when you need through-spindle capacity beyond 10 inches.
04
No, the SLANT TURN 550M uses C-axis with live tooling for milling operations. All milling is on the turret centerline. For off-center milling, consider the INTEGREX e-H series which offers B-axis and Y-axis on a similar-size platform.
