Overview

The Goodway GS-8000 is a super-size box-way turning center for long, large-diameter parts: Ø970 mm (38.2 in) of turning diameter and six bed lengths from 1,200 mm (47.2 in) to 6,200 mm (244.1 in). Among the three models of the series it has the smallest spindle bore, Ø205 mm (8.1 in), and the highest speed, 1,100 rpm.

Power comes from a motor rated 30 kW (40.2 hp) continuous and 45 kW (60.3 hp) on the 15 min. rating, driving a 3-speed gearbox. Goodway quotes a maximum spindle torque of 7,100 Nm. Chucks of 18 in, 21 in, 24 in and 32 in are listed.

The beds are designated L through L6, and for each one the Z-axis travel and the maximum turning length are printed as the same figure: 1,200 mm, 2,200 mm (86.6 in), 3,200 mm (126.0 in), 4,200 mm (165.4 in), 5,200 mm (204.7 in) and 6,200 mm. X travel is 525 mm (20.7 in) and swing Ø1,030 mm (40.6 in). A programmable tailstock with a Ø160 mm (6.3 in) quill, 150 mm (5.9 in) of quill travel and an MT#6 dead center supports the far end, and Goodway's automatic self-centering steady rest accepts workpieces up to Ø520 mm.

Unusually for a lathe of this size, a Y-axis is offered. It travels ±160 mm (±6.3 in) on box ways, with turning diameter limited to Ø910 mm (35.8 in) and X travel to 515 mm (20.3 in). The live tooling that goes with it uses ER50 collets, a 9 kW drive and 3,000 rpm.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Six bed lengths, from 1,200 mm (47.2 in) to 6,200 mm (244.1 in) of turning length
  • 3-speed geared spindle with 7,100 Nm of maximum torque, per Goodway
  • 45 kW (60.3 hp) 15 min. spindle motor rating
  • Optional Y-axis with ±160 mm (±6.3 in) of travel on box ways
  • 1,100 rpm, the highest spindle speed in the GS-8000 series

Limitations

  • Hole through spindle is Ø205 mm (8.1 in), the smallest of the series
  • Continuous motor rating is 30 kW (40.2 hp); the 45 kW (60.3 hp) figure is a 15 min. rating
  • Quill travel is 150 mm (5.9 in), short relative to the bed lengths
  • Live tooling turret and Y-axis are options; no sub-spindle is listed

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How long a workpiece can the GS-8000 turn?

It depends on the bed. Goodway lists six: L at 1,200 mm (47.2 in), L2 at 2,200 mm (86.6 in), L3 at 3,200 mm (126.0 in), L4 at 4,200 mm (165.4 in), L5 at 5,200 mm (204.7 in) and L6 at 6,200 mm (244.1 in). Maximum turning diameter is Ø970 mm (38.2 in).

02 What is the spindle power and torque of the GS-8000?

The motor is rated 30 kW (40.2 hp) continuous and 45 kW (60.3 hp) for 15 min. Goodway states that with the 3-speed gearbox the spindle delivers a maximum torque of 7,100 Nm. Top speed on this model is 1,100 rpm.

03 Does the GS-8000 really have a Y-axis?

As an option, yes. The Y variation provides ±160 mm (±6.3 in) of Y-axis travel, which Goodway also states as 320 mm in total, on a box-way guideway. With it, maximum turning diameter is Ø910 mm (35.8 in) and X travel 515 mm (20.3 in).

04 How do the GS-8000, GS-8600 and GS-8800 differ?

By hole through spindle and speed. The GS-8000 has Ø205 mm (8.1 in) and 1,100 rpm. The GS-8600 has Ø260 mm (10.2 in) and 800 rpm. The GS-8800 has Ø320 mm (12.6 in) and 700 rpm. Travels, motor and chuck sizes are common.
