Price estimate
We do not have a price for the TOS Kuřim SKJ 50 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The TOS Kuřim SKJ 50 is a movable-column vertical lathe that machines diameters up to 10,000 mm (393.7 in) on a clamping plate of only 5,000 mm (196.9 in). The ratio is the point of the SKJ design. The machining diameter is twice the plate.
A frame-type vertical lathe can turn nothing wider than the opening between its columns. The SKJ gets round that by standing the column to one side and letting it travel, 2,000 mm (78.7 in) on this model, so the tool can be carried out to a radius far beyond the plate edge. Large thin rings, which need diameter but weigh comparatively little, are the natural work. Workpiece weight is 80,000/100,000 kg (176,367/220,459 lb).
Machining height is 3,000 - 5,000 mm (118.1 - 196.9 in), with a cross-rail stroke of 2,000 - 3,500 mm (78.7 - 137.8 in) and a ram extension of 2,000/2,500 mm (78.7/98.4 in). Support travel in X is 4,000 mm (157.5 in). The ram section is 340 x 340 mm (13.4 x 13.4 in) and the cutting force 100 kN. The X and Z axes run on sliding guideways.
The plate turns at 100 - 50 rpm, the fastest of the three SKJ sizes. In the maker's list the series is a modular, multifunctional design with milling and grinding function, an optional ram with a built-in milling spindle, and automatic exchange of tool holders and milling heads.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Machining diameter of 10,000 mm (393.7 in) on a 5,000 mm (196.9 in) plate
- Plate speed of 100 - 50 rpm, the highest in the SKJ table
- Cutting force of 100 kN on a 340 x 340 mm ram
- Automatic exchange of tool holders and milling heads
- Machining height of 3,000 - 5,000 mm (118.1 - 196.9 in)
Limitations
- Workpiece weight of 80,000/100,000 kg is the lowest in the series; the SKJ 63 carries 150,000 kg (330,688 lb)
- Sliding guideways only on X and Z, with no hydrostatic option listed for the SKJ
- A 10,000 mm part on a 5,000 mm plate overhangs widely, and the catalogue does not describe the support arrangement
- Column travel is 2,000 mm (78.7 in), half that of the SKJ 80 at 4,000 mm (157.5 in)

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Its column is movable. The table lists a column travel of 2,000 mm (78.7 in) next to the X travel of 4,000 mm (157.5 in), so the tool can be set at radii outside the plate. The workpiece then extends past the clamping plate, and how it is supported there should be discussed with the maker.
02
The workpiece weight row reads 80,000/100,000 kg (176,367/220,459 lb), two alternatives the catalogue does not explain further. The series feature list mentions sturdy tables for loads up to 320 tons, which is the figure for the largest size and not this one.
03
Machining height is 3,000 - 5,000 mm (118.1 - 196.9 in). The cross-rail strokes 2,000 - 3,500 mm (78.7 - 137.8 in) in W and the ram extends 2,000/2,500 mm (78.7/98.4 in) in Z.
04
The plate and what it carries. The SKJ 63 has a 6,300 mm (248.0 in) plate, takes 150,000 kg (330,688 lb) and turns at 40 rpm. Machining diameter, height, travels, ram and cutting force are identical in the two columns.
