Overview

The ROMI VT 1400M is the smallest of Romi's ram-type vertical CNC lathes, and still a large machine: a 1,400 mm (55 in) chuck, 1,600 mm (63 in) of turning diameter and a table that accepts 10,000 kg (22,000 lbs). The M in the name refers to the driven tool in the ram, which with the C axis turns the lathe into a machine that also drills and mills.

It is the quickest of the series. The chuck runs from 1 to 335 rpm, with a first range of 1 to 100 rpm for roughing. Two 31 kW motors drive the table together through what Romi calls a Dual Drive System, listed as 2 x 42 hp / 2 x 31 kW, and the C axis holds up to 31,500 Nm (23,200 lb-ft) for positioning and contouring.

The ram is a 250 x 250 mm (9.8 x 9.8 in) square section with 1,000 mm (39 in) of travel and an ISO 50 taper. Its driven spindle turns at 3 to 3,000 rpm with 700 Nm (516.3 lb-ft) from a 40 hp / 31 kW motor, and tools are changed from a 20-tool magazine. Programmed X travel is 1,145 mm (45 in).

Height under the tool is set by the cross rail, which is repositioned in 6 steps of 150 mm for a total of 900 mm. With the ram, the maximum turning height is 1,500 mm (59 in); parts up to 1,650 mm (65 in) tall are allowed on the table. Both axes rapid at 20 m/min (787 in/min). The machine is 5.6 m (220 in) high, covers 8.3 x 5.7 m (327 x 224 in) and weighs 39,000 kg (85,980 lbs), so building height and foundation are the first things to check.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Chuck speed up to 335 rpm, the highest in the VT Series
  • Driven tool in the ram: ISO 50, 3 to 3,000 rpm, 700 Nm (516.3 lb-ft)
  • C axis with 31,500 Nm (23,200 lb-ft) of maximum torque
  • 20-tool magazine serving the ram
  • Rapid traverse of 20 m/min (787 in/min) in X and Z

Limitations

  • Chuck load is limited to 10,000 kg (22,000 lbs)
  • Ram travel of 1,000 mm (39 in) is the shortest in the series, shared with the VT 2000M
  • The cross rail moves in fixed 150 mm steps, not continuously
  • Needs 5.6 m (220 in) of height and carries 39,000 kg (85,980 lbs) onto the foundation

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What size of part does the ROMI VT 1400M take?

Maximum turning diameter and maximum swing diameter are both 1,600 mm (63 in). Maximum height allowed is 1,650 mm (65 in), maximum turning height with the ram 1,500 mm (59 in), and the chuck carries up to 10,000 kg (22,000 lbs). The chuck itself is 1,400 mm (55 in) in diameter.

02 What does the M mean on the VT 1400M?

The machine has a vertical ram with a driven tool and a C axis. The ram spindle has an ISO 50 taper, a speed range of 3 to 3,000 rpm, 700 Nm (516.3 lb-ft) of maximum torque and a 40 hp / 31 kW motor. The C axis turns at 0 to 2 rpm with up to 31,500 Nm (23,200 lb-ft).

03 How is the table of the VT 1400M driven?

By two motors working together, which Romi calls the DDS or Dual Drive System; installed power is listed as 2 x 42 hp / 2 x 31 kW. The speed range is 1 to 335 rpm, with range 1 covering 1 to 100 rpm.

04 How much space does the VT 1400M need?

Height is 5.6 m (220 in), floor space 8.3 x 5.7 m (327 x 224 in) front by side, and net weight 39,000 kg (85,980 lbs). All three are approximate figures from the catalogue.
