Overview

The Haas ST-35Y is the long-bed version of the ST-28Y, stretching the Z-axis to give you more turning length while keeping the same 40 hp spindle and big-bore capability. With a 305 mm (12 in) chuck, 102 mm (4.0 in) bar capacity, and max cutting length of 1,016 mm (40 in), this machine handles long shaft work that the ST-28Y cannot reach.

The spindle puts out 29.8 kW (40 hp) with 542 Nm (400 ft-lb) of torque at 500 RPM and a max speed of 3,200 RPM. Same power train as the ST-28Y. The optional gearbox pushes torque to 1,898 Nm (1,400 ft-lb) at 150 RPM. On a machine with 40 inches of Z-travel, that gearbox option starts to make more sense because you are more likely to be turning larger, heavier parts that benefit from low-speed, high-torque cuts.

Y-axis travel remains at 102 mm (4.0 in) total on the 12-station BMT-65 turret with 6,000 RPM live tooling. C-axis positioning holds plus or minus 0.01 degrees. The milling capability lets you drill off-center holes, cut flats, and tap along the full length of longer workpieces without a second operation on a mill.

The longer bed changes the machine's character compared to the ST-28Y. At roughly 8,165 kg (18,000 lb), it has more mass for vibration damping, which helps when turning at the far end of a long overhang. The tailstock becomes more important on this machine, and most shops spec the programmable tailstock for supporting long shaft work.

At roughly $125,000-$155,000 configured, the ST-35Y fills a specific niche: shops that need big-bore, long-bed Y-axis turning at a price below the Japanese competition. Pump shafts, drive shafts, hydraulic cylinders, and long fittings are the bread-and-butter work for this machine. It competes with the Mazak QT-350MSY and Okuma LB4000 EX II, both of which cost significantly more but offer sub-spindle options and tighter tolerances. Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,016 mm (40 in) cutting length handles long shaft work, hydraulic cylinders, and extended components that shorter machines cannot reach
  • 40 hp spindle with 400 ft-lb standard torque and optional 1,400 ft-lb gearbox handles heavy roughing in steel and stainless
  • 102 mm (4.0 in) bar capacity enables through-spindle work on large-diameter stock, pipe, and tubing
  • BMT-65 turret with Y-axis and 6,000 RPM live tooling provides mill-turn capability along the full working length
  • 8,165 kg (18,000 lb) machine mass provides thermal stability and vibration damping for long overhang cuts
  • Same NGC control as every Haas machine for consistent programming and minimal operator training
  • Priced significantly below Mazak QT-350MSY and Okuma LB4000 EX II long-bed alternatives

Limitations

  • 3,200 RPM max spindle speed limits surface speed on small-diameter finishing and aluminum work
  • 3.7 kW (5 hp) live tooling motor is the same as smaller ST models and can feel underpowered for aggressive milling on larger parts
  • Long-bed design requires more floor space than the ST-28Y with a larger machine footprint
  • No sub-spindle option means parts requiring back-working need a second operation
  • Programmable tailstock is practically required for long shaft work but adds to the configured price

Best For

Long shaft production including pump shafts, drive shafts, and hydraulic cylinder components Oil and gas fitting manufacturers working with extended tubular and pipe stock Shops turning parts over 700 mm long that need secondary milling, drilling, or tapping operations Heavy-duty production turning requiring 40 hp and high torque on large-diameter, long workpieces Contract manufacturers running diverse part families with both short and long turning requirements Shops stepping up from the ST-28Y that need more Z-axis travel for longer components

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new Haas ST-35Y cost?

Base price starts around $125,000. Common configurations with tailstock, chip conveyor, high-pressure coolant, and bar feeder interface run $140,000-$155,000. The programmable tailstock is almost a must-have for long shaft work and adds about $5,000 to the price.

02 What is the difference between the ST-35Y and the ST-28Y?

The ST-35Y is the long-bed version of the ST-28Y. Same spindle, same turret, same bar capacity. The difference is Z-axis travel: 1,016 mm (40 in) on the ST-35Y versus 711 mm (28 in) on the ST-28Y. If your parts fit within 28 inches, save money and floor space with the ST-28Y.

03 Do I need the programmable tailstock?

For long shaft work, yes. Without tailstock support, parts over 3-4 times their diameter in length will deflect under cutting forces, causing taper, chatter, and poor surface finish. The programmable tailstock positions automatically and retracts for part loading.

04 How does the ST-35Y compare to the Mazak QT-350MSY?

The Mazak offers a sub-spindle option, more refined control, and generally tighter tolerances. It also costs $50,000 or more above the ST-35Y. The Haas is the value play for shops that need long-bed, big-bore Y-axis turning without crossing the $200K threshold.

05 Can the ST-35Y handle heavy interrupted cuts?

With the optional gearbox pushing 1,400 ft-lb at 150 RPM, yes. The 40 hp spindle and 18,000 lb machine mass provide the power and stability for aggressive roughing on large castings and forgings. Without the gearbox, the standard 400 ft-lb handles most production turning applications.
