Overview

The Quicktech T8 Hybrid-Y puts two different tool systems on one slant-bed lathe: a BMT-55 power turret with 12 stations and Y axis, and a gantry slide carrying fixed and live tools on its own X2/Y2/Z2 axes. With a main spindle for 65 mm (2.6 in) bar and a sub-spindle for 42 mm (1.7 in) bar, it is the most heavily equipped of the T8 machines and the only one with a second tool system in its table.

The turret does what a turret does well. It swings 300 mm (11.8 in) over the cross slide, travels 150 mm / 380 mm (5.9 in / 15.0 in) in X1/Z1 and has 80 mm = ±40 mm (3.1 in = ±1.6 in) of Y1. Quicktech says driven tools can be fitted on six of its stations. The gantry adds what a turret lacks: many tools reachable without indexing. Its row reads OD*5 / ID*9 / LiveTool*12, on 470 mm / 380 mm / 280 mm (18.5 in / 15.0 in / 11.0 in) of travel, and the maker describes a free-angle B axis of 360° for angular tapping and drilling.

Because the two systems are independent, the control runs 2 programs simultaneously. Quicktech claims cycle time can be saved up to 45%. How much of that a given part sees depends on whether its operations can be split evenly between turret and gantry; a part that is mostly one long boring cycle gains little.

Spindle power is 11 kW (14.8 hp) on the main and 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) on the sub-spindle, where 5.5 kW (7.4 hp) is the option. Main spindle speed is 3,000 rpm, optionally 4,000 rpm. The control is a Mitsubishi M830S. This is also the largest T8: 4,118 mm long with the chip conveyor and 6,100 kg (13,448 lb).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Turret and gantry tool systems on one machine, run by 2 programs simultaneously
  • Gantry row of OD*5 / ID*9 / LiveTool*12 in addition to the 12-station BMT-55 power turret
  • Y axis on both systems: Y1 of 80 mm = ±40 mm (3.1 in = ±1.6 in) and a Y2 stroke within 470 mm / 380 mm / 280 mm (18.5 in / 15.0 in / 11.0 in)
  • Free-angle B axis of 360° on the gantry for angular tapping and drilling, per the maker's feature list
  • High-pressure coolant pump rated 25 bar, 30 L/min and a 240 L tank
  • ER20 live spindles are gear driven with rigid tapping as standard, according to the maker

Limitations

  • Standard main spindle speed is 3,000 rpm, with 4,000 rpm as an option
  • The sub-spindle is limited to 100 mm (3.9 in) turning diameter and 100 mm (3.9 in) turning length
  • At 6,100 kg (13,448 lb) and 2,051 mm / 2,180 mm (80.7 in / 85.8 in) in width and height it needs more room than the other T8 models
  • Two tool systems working in one envelope mean more programming and collision checking than a single-turret lathe
06

Best For

Complex bar parts up to 65 mm (2.6 in) with many drilled, tapped and milled features Parts whose operations divide between turret and gantry so both cut at once Angled holes and threads that need the 360° B axis Complete machining of both ends using the 42 mm (1.7 in) sub-spindle

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What makes the T8 Hybrid-Y a hybrid?

It combines two tool systems. System 1 is a BMT-55 power turret with 12 tools. System 2 is a gantry listed with OD*5 / ID*9 / LiveTool*12. Quicktech's feature list calls this a power turret and flexible gantry type tooling system and says the system allows running 2 programs simultaneously.

02 How does the T8 Hybrid-Y differ from the T8 Twin-Y?

The T8 Twin-Y has the turret and a sub-spindle but no gantry: its table shows only a Z2 travel for the second axis group. The T8 Hybrid-Y adds the gantry with 470 mm / 380 mm / 280 mm (18.5 in / 15.0 in / 11.0 in) of X2/Y2/Z2 travel, uses a Mitsubishi M830S where the T8 Twin-Y lists a Mitsubishi M80, and weighs 6,100 kg (13,448 lb) against 5,700 kg (12,566 lb).

03 What are the spindle capacities?

The main spindle takes 65 mm (2.6 in) bar through a 66 mm (2.6 in) bore on an A2-6 nose, with 300 mm (11.8 in) maximum turning diameter and 200 mm (7.9 in) turning length. The sub-spindle takes 42 mm (1.7 in) bar on an A2-5 nose and runs to 4,000 rpm, or 6,000 rpm as an option.

04 How many live tools can it run?

The gantry row lists 12 live tools, and the maker says the turret's 12 stations can be equipped with driven tools on six stations. The feature list speaks of up to 24 live tools; ask Quicktech how that count is made up for the configuration quoted.

05 How much floor space does the T8 Hybrid-Y need?

Length is 2,795 mm / 4,118 mm (110.0 in / 162.1 in) without and with the chip conveyor. Width and height are 2,051 mm / 2,180 mm (80.7 in / 85.8 in). Machine weight is 6,100 kg (13,448 lb).
