Overview

The Quicktech S42 ATM is a twin-spindle bar machine built around a B-axis tool spindle with an automatic tool changer: 42 mm (1.7 in) bar capacity on both spindles, an HSK-T40 tool spindle that runs to 12,000 rpm, and a 24-station magazine. That layout sets it apart from the rest of the maker's range, where milling is done by gear-driven live tools on a gang slide or a turret.

Both work spindles carry an ISO(DIN) A2-5 nose and run to 6,000 rpm. The main spindle is rated 11 kW (14.8 hp) with a 43 mm (1.7 in) bore. The sub-spindle is a built-in unit of 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) with a 33 mm (1.3 in) bore, so the second side of the part is meant for lighter cuts than the first. Turning length depends on the operation: the table gives 350 mm (13.8 in) for OD turning but 140 mm (5.5 in) for drilling on the main spindle, and 230 mm (9.1 in) against 55 mm (2.2 in) on the sub-spindle.

The tool spindle is a built-in motor of 10 kW (13.4 hp) and swings through a B axis of 190° = ±95°, which is what allows angled holes and faces without special holders. A tool change takes 1.3 sec, and the magazine accepts tools of up to 3 kg (7 lb). Next to the tool spindle sits a small gantry block with 6 positions for ER20 / Ø20 mm drill holders. Z travel is 400 mm (15.7 in) on the first axis group and 510 mm (20.1 in) on the second.

Quicktech presents the S42 as a machine for medical parts, naming titanium, chrome and stainless steel and one-process manufacturing. The control is a Mitsubishi M830S. Coolant is supplied at 5 bar + 25 bar from a 240 L tank. Two rows of the maker's tool-magazine table, maximum tool diameter and maximum tool length, are printed without a unit, so confirm those limits with Quicktech before planning long or wide tools.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • HSK-T40 tool spindle with a built-in 10 kW (13.4 hp) motor and 12,000 rpm, fed from a 24-station magazine
  • B axis of 190° = ±95° for angled drilling and milling without angle heads
  • Both spindles take 42 mm (1.7 in) bar and run to 6,000 rpm on ISO(DIN) A2-5 noses
  • Tool change time of 1.3 sec keeps short milling operations from dominating the cycle
  • Coolant at 5 bar + 25 bar from a 240 L tank

Limitations

  • The sub-spindle motor is 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) against 11 kW (14.8 hp) on the main spindle, so heavy cuts belong on the first side
  • Drilling length is 140 mm (5.5 in) on the main spindle and 55 mm (2.2 in) on the sub-spindle, well short of the OD turning lengths
  • Magazine tools are limited to 3 kg (7 lb)
  • The running centre (Ø16 Running center (Quill)) and the pneumatic part support are listed as optional accessories
06

Best For

Bar parts up to 42 mm (1.7 in) that need angled milling and drilling on a B axis Medical components in titanium or stainless steel, the application the maker names Parts finished on both ends in one cycle across two 6,000 rpm spindles Jobs that need more milling tools than a live-tool gang block holds, using the 24-station magazine

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What kind of machine is the S42 ATM?

It is a twin-spindle bar lathe with a B-axis tool spindle and an automatic tool changer. The tool spindle takes HSK-T40 tools, runs to 12,000 rpm and is served by a 24-station magazine. Both work spindles take 42 mm (1.7 in) bar. Quicktech describes it as a machine for medical parts and one-process manufacturing.

02 What are the spindle ratings of the S42 ATM?

The main spindle is rated 11 kW (14.8 hp) and the sub-spindle is a built-in spindle of 3.7 kW (5.0 hp). Both run to 6,000 rpm on an ISO(DIN) A2-5 nose. The bore is 43 mm (1.7 in) on the main spindle and 33 mm (1.3 in) on the sub-spindle. The tool spindle has a built-in 10 kW (13.4 hp) motor and 12,000 rpm.

03 How far does the B axis swing?

The table gives the B axis as 190° = ±95°, driven by an AC Servo 1.0 kW (1.3 hp) motor. Y travel is 80 = ±40 mm (3.1 = ±1.6 in) on both axis groups, so off-centre features are reachable on the main and the sub-spindle side.

04 How long a part can the S42 ATM turn?

On the main spindle the maximum turning length is 350 mm (13.8 in) for OD turning and 140 mm (5.5 in) for drilling. On the sub-spindle it is 230 mm (9.1 in) for OD turning and 55 mm (2.2 in) for drilling. A Ø16 running centre and a pneumatic part support are listed as optional accessories for longer work.

05 What control and coolant system does the S42 ATM have?

The control is a Mitsubishi M830S. The coolant system has a 240 L tank and a coolant motor row of 2 kW + 2 kW, delivering 5 bar + 25 bar. The hydraulic unit runs at 50 kg/cm² from a 1 HP motor. The machine weighs 4,350 kg (9,590 lb).
