Overview

The Pama Speedram 1000 is a ram-type horizontal boring and milling machining center from Italian specialist Pama, designed for high-productivity machining of medium-to-large workpieces in aerospace, automotive tooling, and energy sectors. The ram design provides a rigid spindle carrier that travels vertically and horizontally without the column movement required on floor borers, enabling faster dynamic performance and higher accuracy on multi-face machining. The 100mm diameter spindle is mounted in the ram body with 800mm of ram extension (W-axis). A rotary table option in sizes up to 2,500mm enables 4-face machining in a single setup. The Speedram 1000 incorporates Pama's proprietary spindle thermal compensation system that monitors and corrects for thermal growth during long machining cycles. The Siemens 840D sl control with Pama's machining cycles covers standard boring, milling, and facing operations with simple CNC input.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Ram design provides faster dynamic performance vs column-type floor borers
  • Thermal compensation system maintains accuracy on long cycle runs
  • Rotary table option for 4-face machining in single setup
  • 100mm spindle with 6,000 Nm torque for heavy cutting
  • Pama Italian build quality with strong European service network

Limitations

  • Ram design limits Z-depth on very long bores vs floor-type machines
  • High capital cost
  • Limited North American dealer presence vs Fermat or TOS Varnsdorf
05

Best For

Aerospace tooling, automotive die and mold, and energy sector manufacturers requiring multi-face machining of medium-to-large prismatic workpieces with high dynamic accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between a ram-type and floor-type horizontal boring machine?

A ram-type boring machine has a spindle mounted in a rigid ram that moves horizontally and vertically, with workpiece movement on a cross-slide table. A floor-type has the spindle in a column that travels along floor rails, with the workpiece on a fixed floor plate. Ram types offer faster dynamics and better accuracy for medium-size work; floor types handle unlimited workpiece weight for large structural parts.
