Overview

The Palmary OIG-50 is a compact high-speed CNC internal grinder for very small bores: up to Ø20 mm (0.8 in) in diameter and 40 mm (1.6 in) in length, in parts chucked at up to Ø50 mm (2.0 in). Its grinding wheel spindle runs at 90,000 rpm.

Nothing about it resembles the larger OIG machines. The bed is man-made mineral, which Palmary says limits the changes caused by temperature rise. Both spindles are built-in motor types: the wheel spindle, Ø100 mm (3.9 in) in body diameter, and the work spindle, Ø160 mm (6.3 in), running at 0 to 3,000 rpm with an automatic air chuck. Both are lubricated by an oil and air system and cooled by circulating oil from an oil cooler.

The axes are driven by linear motors on linear guideways, with a minimum input increment of 0.0001 mm and 20 m/min (787 ipm) rapids. Strokes are short, 70 mm (2.8 in) on X and 140 mm (5.5 in) on Z, because the parts are. Linear scales on both axes are standard. Dressing is by a roller with its own built-in motor at 5,000 to 10,000 rpm.

Palmary makes a point of footprint: the machine is described as only about the size of a sheet of B1 paper, and as easy to fit with automatic loading. An automatic load and unload robot is on the option list. The control is a FANUC CNC with a graphical conversational interface. Weight is 2,000 kg (4,409 lb).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 90,000 rpm built-in grinding wheel spindle for bores up to Ø20 mm (0.8 in)
  • Linear motors on X and Z with 0.0001 mm minimum input increment and linear scales
  • Man-made mineral bed, which Palmary says reduces change from temperature rise
  • Roller dressing device with built-in motor is a standard accessory
  • Footprint described by Palmary as about the size of B1 paper

Limitations

  • Capacity ends at Ø20 mm (0.8 in) bore and 40 mm (1.6 in) grinding length
  • Workhead swivels only +0.5° to -0.5°
  • Short strokes: 70 mm (2.8 in) on X and 140 mm (5.5 in) on Z
  • Needs clean compressed air for the oil and air spindle lubrication and air chuck

Best For

Small bores in nozzles and injector parts Miniature bearing rings and bushes Precision mould components with bores up to Ø20 mm (0.8 in) High-volume cells with the optional load and unload robot

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What size of bore does the Palmary OIG-50 grind?

Up to Ø20 mm (0.8 in) in diameter and 40 mm (1.6 in) in length. The maximum chuck outer diameter is Ø50 mm (2.0 in). Palmary names high-precision mould manufacturing, components and nozzle parts for the automobile and motorcycle industry as applications.

02 How fast is the spindle of the OIG-50?

The grinding wheel spindle is a built-in type running at 90,000 rpm. The work spindle is also built-in, at 0 to 3,000 rpm, and the dressing roller has its own built-in motor at 5,000 to 10,000 rpm.

03 What drives the axes of the OIG-50?

Linear motors on linear guideways for both X and Z. Each axis has a 0.0001 mm minimum input increment and a 20 m/min (787 ipm) rapid feedrate. Strokes are 70 mm (2.8 in) on X and 140 mm (5.5 in) on Z, and linear scales on both axes are standard.

04 Why does the OIG-50 use a mineral bed?

Palmary says the artificial mineral machine body reduces the large change caused by temperature rise, improves the stability of the machine and allows higher-accuracy processing. The table lists the bed material as man-made mineral, and the machine weighs 2,000 kg (4,409 lb).
