Overview
A Studer S41 is specified first by its length. Z travel is either 1'150 mm (45.3 inch) or 1'750 mm (68.9 inch), which goes with a length of 1'000 mm (40") or 1'600 mm (63 inch). Everything else in the table is common to both versions.
The wheel spindle is rated 15 kW (20 hp) and runs up to 4'500 rpm. It carries a grinding wheel of up to 508 mm (20 inch) in diameter and 100 mm (3.9 inch) in width. A wheel that wide lets a single plunge cover a long bearing seat, and the 15 kW (20 hp) is there to drive it across the full face. It also allows a profiled wheel to finish a shoulder and a diameter together.
Three linear axes are listed, which is one more than a plain cylindrical grinder has. X travel is 350 mm (13.8 inch) and rapid traverse is 20'000 mm/min (787 inch/min) in both X and Z. On the longer version that rate keeps the wheelhead from spending the cycle crossing between seats at opposite ends of a shaft. Y travel is 100 mm (3.9 inch). A Y axis moves the wheel off the center line of the part, which form and thread work can need; the table does not say which wheelhead it is fitted to, so ask before assuming it is on the machine quoted.
