Overview

The Onsrud 181G 5-Axis is a fifteen-foot 5-axis gantry router with an 18 in (457 mm) Z-stroke. Onsrud lists it in the 18 in block of its table alone, with a table of 181 in (4,598 mm) by 61 in (1,550 mm).

It is best understood next to the 193G 5-Axis. The two occupy the same frame position, and the frame lengths are within a few inches of each other. But the 193G 5-Axis has a 16 in stroke and a table of 192.5 in (4,890 mm). The 181G 5-Axis trades a foot of table for two inches of Z and a much taller gantry: it stands 140 in (3,556 mm).

Is that trade worth it? Two inches sounds small. On a 5-axis machine with a short stroke, though, every inch decides whether the head can tilt to the angle a part needs without running out of travel. If parts are flat, take the lower machine. If they have ribs, flanges or raised fixtures, the extra stroke is the safer choice.

The machine is 283 in (7,189 mm) long and 136 in (3,455 mm) wide and has 4 vacuum zones as standard. Spindle power is 18 hp (13.4 kW) with 24,000 rpm, or 33 hp (24.6 kW) as an option, and the tool changer holds 12.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the table size of the Onsrud 181G 5-Axis?

181 in (4,598 mm) in X by 61 in (1,550 mm) in Y, with 4 vacuum zones as standard. The frame is 283 in (7,189 mm) long, 136 in (3,455 mm) wide and 140 in (3,556 mm) high.

02 How is the 181G 5-Axis different from the 193G 5-Axis?

The 193G 5-Axis has a 16 in stroke, a 192.5 in (4,890 mm) table and a machine height of 103 in (2,617 mm). The 181G 5-Axis has an 18 in stroke, a 181 in (4,598 mm) table and a height of 140 in (3,556 mm).

03 Why is the 181G 5-Axis so much taller than the 193G 5-Axis?

Onsrud's table gives 140 in (3,556 mm) for every machine in the 18 in block. The 193G 5-Axis, in the 16 in block, is listed at 103 in (2,617 mm). The page does not say why. Treat the height as a fixed requirement of the 18 in stroke.

04 Does the 181G 5-Axis support pendulum processing?

Onsrud describes pendulum processing for the G-Series, with one zone loaded while the other is machined. The 4 standard zones on this table can be split into two halves of roughly seven and a half feet each.
